Randomized Controlled TrialRandomised clinical trial: pregabalin attenuates experimental visceral pain through sub-cortical mechanisms in patients with painful chronic pancreatitis.
Pregabalin has a broad spectrum of analgesic and antihyperalgesic activity in both basic and clinical studies. However, its mechanisms and sites of action have yet to be determined in humans. ⋯ Pregabalin was superior to placebo for attenuation of experimental visceral pain in chronic pancreatitis patients. We suggest its antinociceptive effects to be mediated primarily through sub-cortical mechanisms.

Cycled enteral antibiotics reduce sepsis rates in paediatric patients on long-term parenteral nutrition for intestinal failure.
Long-term parenteral nutrition has transformed the prognosis for children suffering from intestinal failure. However, parenteral nutrition itself is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality including that caused by sepsis. ⋯ Cycled enteral antibiotics significantly reduced the rate of sepsis in a small group of paediatric intestinal failure patients. Larger well-designed prospective studies are warranted to further explore this finding.

Randomized Controlled TrialRandomised clinical trial: preventive treatment with topical rectal beclomethasone dipropionate reduces post-radiation risk of bleeding in patients irradiated for prostate cancer.
Radiotherapy is an established treatment modality for prostate cancer; however, up to a third of patients develops a radiation-induced proctopathy. ⋯ Preventive treatment with topical rectal BDP during radiotherapy for prostate cancer significantly reduces the risk of rectal bleeding and radiation-induced mucosal changes and improves patient's quality of life, but does not influence other radiation-induced symptoms.
