Cancer patients showing highly elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) in the primary tumor may benefit from particularly aggressive treatment. There is some evidence that gadolinium diethylene-triamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA)-based dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) may be a useful non-invasive method for providing information on the IFP of tumors. The purpose of this preclinical study was to investigate whether any association between DCE-MRI-derived parametric images and tumor IFP can be strengthened by using MR contrast agents with higher molecular weights than that of Gd-DTPA. ⋯ K(trans) images, but not v(e) images, derived by pharmacokinetic analysis of DCE-MRI data for low-molecular-weight contrast agents may provide information on the IFP of tumors. Any association between K(trans) and IFP cannot be expected to be improved by using contrast agents with higher molecular weights than those of Gd-DTPA and P846.

Gadolinium diethylene-triamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA)-based dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has been suggested to be a useful non-invasive method for providing biomarkers for personalized cancer treatment. In this preclinical study, we investigated whether Gd-DTPA-based DCE-MRI may have the potential to differentiate between poorly and highly metastatic tumors. ⋯ This study supports the clinical attempts to establish DCE-MRI as a method for providing biomarkers for tumor aggressiveness and suggests that tumors showing low K(trans) and low ve values may have high probability of lymphogenous metastatic dissemination.

Effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction on sleep quality: results of a randomized trial among Danish breast cancer patients.
The prevalence of sleep disturbance is high among cancer patients, and the sleep problems tend to last for years after the end of treatment. As part of a large randomized controlled clinical trial (the MICA trial, NCT00990977) of the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on psychological and somatic symptoms among breast cancer patients, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of MBSR on the secondary outcome, 'sleep quality'. ⋯ MBSR had a statistically significant effect on sleep quality just after the intervention but no long-term effect among breast cancer patients. Future trials in which participation is restricted to patients with significant sleep problems are recommended for evaluating the effect of MBSR on sleep quality.

A breast cancer diagnosis has been suggested as a teachable moment when a woman is more open to making healthier lifestyle changes. Little is known about the health behaviour changes women with breast cancer initiate compared to those made by other women. ⋯ Women with breast cancer did not reduce their BMI, or modify their alcohol use or tobacco consumption compared with cancer-free women. This study indicates that guidelines and interventions to change health behaviour are needed after a cancer diagnosis.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment in cancer cachexia: a systematic literature review.
There are no established treatments for cachexia. Recently it has been suggested that the evidence for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) treatment is sufficient to support its regular clinical use. Primary objective in this systematic review was to assess efficacy and safety of NSAID treatment in improving body weight and muscle mass in patients with cancer cachexia. Secondary objectives were to assess whether this treatment could improve other cachexia domains such as anorexia and food intake, catabolic drive and function. ⋯ NSAIDs may improve weight in cancer patients with cachexia, and there is some evidence on effect on physical performance, self-reported quality of life and inflammatory parameters. Evidence is too frail to recommend NSAID for cachexia outside clinical trials. This is supported by the known side effects of NSAIDs, even though the reviewed literature report almost negligible toxicity.
