For tumours near organs at risk, there is concern about unintended increase in biological dose from elevated linear energy transfer (LET) at the distal end of treatment fields. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate how different paediatric posterior fossa tumour locations impact LET and biological dose to the brainstem during intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT). ⋯ Using IMPT to treat posterior fossa tumours may result in high LETd values within the brainstem, particularly if the tumour volume is separated from the brainstem. However, the D × RBELET was greater for tumours that approached or invaded the brainstem. Changing field angles showed a reduction of LETd and D × RBELET in the brainstem.

Model-based approach for quantitative estimates of skin, heart, and lung toxicity risk for left-side photon and proton irradiation after breast-conserving surgery.
Proton beam therapy represents a promising modality for left-side breast cancer (BC) treatment, but concerns have been raised about skin toxicity and poor cosmesis. The aim of this study is to apply skin normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) model for intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) optimization in left-side BC. ⋯ Our analysis suggests that IMPT might be safely applied without increasing the risk of severe acute radiation induced skin toxicity. The quantitative risk estimates also support the potential clinical benefits of IMPT for left-side BC irradiation due to lower risk of cardiac and pulmonary morbidity. The applied approach might be relevant on the long term for the setup of cost-effectiveness evaluation strategies based on NTCP predictions.

Sequelae such as pain, sensory disturbances and psychological distress are well known after treatment for invasive breast cancer (IBC). Patients treated for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) receive a similar treatment as low-risk IBC. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe prevalence of postoperative pain, sensory disturbances, psychological distress and rehabilitation needs among Danish women with DCIS.

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a measure of systemic inflammatory response, has been associated with poor outcome in several solid tumors, including prostate cancer. We retrospectively investigated the prognostic role of pretreatment NLR in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients treated with first-line docetaxel. ⋯ In this retrospective series, metastatic CRPC patients who started first-line docetaxel with a low pretreatment NLR had a significantly better survival. In addition to known prognostic factors, NLR can be useful to improve prognostic evaluation of patients in this setting.

Denosumab is a relatively new treatment option for patients with giant-cell tumor of bone (GCTB). The purpose of this study was to report the results for patients treated in Norway. ⋯ In a nationwide GCTB patient cohort, denosumab was an effective agent and durable responses were observed. Our results do not support the use of adjuvant therapy in routine clinical practice. 18F-FDG PET/CT could be a valuable tool for early response evaluation.
