ReviewOutcomes from mild and moderate traumatic brain injuries among children and adolescents: A systematic review of studies from 2008-2013.
To systematically review existing empirical evidence concerning neuropsychological, psychosocial and academic outcomes following mild and moderate TBI during childhood and adolescence. ⋯ The results suggest that not all children with mild or moderate TBI recover without long-term problems. Few studies followed children and adolescents with mild TBIs for extended periods of time, although it is clinically important to monitor patients over time.

Comparative StudyFunctional level during the first 2 years after moderate and severe traumatic brain injury.
Long-term outcomes after TBI are examined to a large extent, but longitudinal studies with more than 1-year follow-up time after injury have been fewer in number. The course of recovery may vary due to a number of factors and it is still somewhat unclear which factors are contributing. ⋯ The study results may indicate that two of the most used outcome measures in TBI research are more relevant for assessment of the functional recovery in a sub-acute phase than in later stages of TBI recovery.

ReviewEmbracing failure: What the Phase III progesterone studies can teach about TBI clinical trials.
Despite positive preclinical studies and two positive Phase II clinical trials, two large Phase III clinical trials of progesterone treatment of acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) recently ended with negative results, so a 100% failure rate continues to plague the field of TBI trials. ⋯ Better definitions of injury and healing and better outcome measures are essential to change the embrace of failure that has dominated the field for over 30 years. This review offers suggestions to improve the situation.

Observational StudyPrediction of neuropsychological outcome after mild traumatic brain injury using clinical parameters, serum S100B protein and findings on computed tomography.
To identify if demographics, clinical and computed tomographic (CT) characteristics at first presentation and S100B concentrations at 3 and 6 hours after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) predict the development of post-concussion syndrome (PCS) after 1 month. ⋯ Outcome prediction using baseline characteristics (post-traumatic headache and seizure), CT and laboratory findings (6-hour S100B) were valuable factors for identification of the individual MTBI patient at risk for developing PCS 1 month after the injury.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPrescribing practice and off-label use of psychotropic medications in post-acute brain injury rehabilitation centres: a cross-sectional survey.
Guidance on pharmacotherapy of neurobehavioural sequelae post-acquired brain injury (ABI) is limited. Clinicians face the choice of prescribing off-label. This survey assesses prescribing practice and off-label use of psychotropic medications in Italian brain injury rehabilitation centres and factors associated with atypical antipsychotics use. ⋯ In clinical practice, the effectiveness and safety of medications, in particular off-label, should be systematically monitored. Studies are needed to improve the quality of evidence guiding pharmacotherapy and to evaluate effectiveness and safety of off-label prescribing.
