Assessment of mild traumatic brain injury with the King-Devick Test in an emergency department sample.
The King-Devick Test (K-D) is a brief measure of cognitive processing speed and rapid gaze shifting that appears sensitive to the effects of sport-related concussion. This study evaluated its diagnostic and incremental validity in civilian patients with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). ⋯ The present findings do not support the K-D Test for the assessment of civilian MTBI in an ED setting.

Adjusting to persistent post-concussive symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury and subsequent psycho-educational intervention: a qualitative analysis in military personnel.
Best practice guidelines outline ways in which mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) should be managed. In line with the existing evidence base, DMRC Headley Court established a treatment programme for UK servicemen and women with mTBI. This study explored the experiences of a sample of UK military personnel living with PPCS, who also received psycho-educational intervention (Phase 2) at this unit. ⋯ Following a flexible and tailored intervention for PPCS, patients report feeling empowered and describe having a renewed sense of stability.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) among UK military personnel whilst deployed in Afghanistan in 2011.
mTBI has been termed the 'signature injury' of recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most mTBI research uses retrospective accounts of exposure and point of injury symptoms; mTBI is reportedly less common among UK than US Forces. ⋯ This study used contemporaneous data gathered in the deployed location which are subject to less memory distortion than studies using post-deployment recall. The incidence of mTBI was substantially lower than those reported in both US and UK post-deployment studies which is consistent with inflated reporting of symptoms when measured post-deployment.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudySustained outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury: results of a five-emergency department longitudinal study.
To report on the occurrence of sustained outcomes including post-concussion symptoms, health services used and indicators of social disruption following a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). ⋯ These findings argue that some with an MTBI suffer real complaints and they are sustained from 3 to at least 6 months. More effort should be given toward specificity of these symptoms from those reported by members of the comparison group.

ReviewDisclosure and non-disclosure of concussion and concussion symptoms in athletes: review and application of the socio-ecological framework.
To summarize the factors associated with athletes' disclosure-and non-disclosure-of sports-related concussion and concussion symptoms within the context of the socio-ecological framework and to identify research gaps in the current literature. ⋯ Research gaps exist concerning factors influencing athletes' disclosure of sports-related concussions and concussion symptoms. Notably, researchers have focused on intra-personal and inter-personal levels, placing less emphasis on the environment and policy levels.
