ReviewParoxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity after acquired brain injury: a review of diagnostic criteria.
To evaluate the development and usage of diagnostic criteria for paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) following acquired brain injury (ABI), then comparatively analyse published criteria. ⋯ Of necessity, diagnostic criteria have been developed ad hoc. The differences between criteria complicate both clinical diagnosis and the process of comparing research cohorts. These findings demarcate the need for a single set of PSH diagnostic criteria and provide the substrate for scientific consensus.

ReviewDefining meaningful outcomes after decompressive craniectomy for traumatic brain injury: existing challenges and future targets.
Optimal management of increased intra-cranial pressure following severe traumatic brain injury comprises a combination of sequential medical and surgical interventions. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a cautiously recommended surgical option that has been shown to reduce intracranial pressure. Considerable variability in the timing and frequency of using DC across neurosurgical centres reflects, in part, the lack of clarity regarding long-term outcomes. The majority of previous work reporting outcomes among individuals who have received DC following traumatic brain injury (TBI) has focused predominantly on gross physical outcomes, to the relative exclusion of more subtle functional, social and psychological factors. ⋯ This paper reviews the methodological aspects of previous studies that have reported outcomes following DC and provides recommendations to guide the future assessment of recovery to enable meaningful conclusions to be drawn from the literature describing outcomes after DC following severe TBI.

ReviewConceptualizing functional cognition in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
To conceptualize functional cognitive constructs across the continuum of traumatic brain injury (TBI) recovery, to form the foundation for the Computer Adaptive Measure of Functional Cognition for TBI (CAMFC-TBI). ⋯ Conceptualizing functional cognitive constructs is the first step in CAMFC-TBI development. Future project stages include item pool development, qualitative testing, field-testing, psychometric analysis and computerized adaptive test programming.

Multicenter StudySeverity and outcome of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) with different causes of injury.
Most epidemiological studies and reports have reached a consensus on the leading causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite the fact that the area of TBI is relatively well studied, reports on differences in severity and outcome of TBI with different causes are lacking. ⋯ It is concluded that the causes of TBI should be considered by both clinicians and public health professionals as a lead in prognosis of outcome and policy planning.

Comparative StudyEmergency department prediction of post-concussive syndrome following mild traumatic brain injury--an international cross-validation study.
Between 20-50% of those suffering a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) will suffer symptoms beyond 3 months or post-concussive disorder (PCD). Researchers in Sydney conducted a prospective controlled study which identified that bedside recordings of memory impairment together with recordings of moderate or severe pain could predict those who would suffer PCS with 80% sensitivity and specificity of 76%. ⋯ This is the first study to compare populations from different countries with diverse language groups using a predictive model for identifying PCD following MTBI. The model may be able to identify an 'at risk' population to whom pre-emptive treatment can be offered.
