Functional connectivity networks associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain in old age.
Musculoskeletal disorders are common and often lead to chronic pain in older adults. Because the efficacy of interventions varies with the duration of pain, the identification of early biomarkers for chronic pain would have important public health consequences. Imaging of functional connectivity differences between brain regions might identify some of the earliest functional consequences of a disease process. We tested the hypothesis that chronic musculoskeletal pain in older persons is associated with changes in functional brain connectivity. ⋯ Chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with a specific pattern of functional connectivity between brain regions among older adults.

Depression and cardiovascular risk factors: evidence from a large postmortem sample.
We aimed to investigate the association of depression with cardiovascular risk factors and diseases (CVRFD) in a large population-based sample. ⋯ In our cross-sectional study, sedentary individuals and smokers showed a higher chance of depression during lifetime. Measures to control these common risk factors could decrease the incidence of depression.

Review Meta AnalysisCochrane review on 'Statins for the treatment of dementia'.
This review aimed to assess the clinical efficacy and tolerability of statins in the treatment of dementia. ⋯ There is insufficient evidence to recommend statins for the treatment of dementia.

Temporal relationships between depressive symptoms and white matter hyperintensities in older men and women.
Associations between vascular disease and depression in late life, including increased white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), have been reported. Whether depression is an etiology or a consequence of vascular disease is still unknown. We investigated the temporal relationship between depressive symptoms and WMHs in older men and women. ⋯ White matter disease may be a consequence of depressed mood in men but not in women. Intervention strategies for depression may slow the progression of white matter disease in older men. These results add to previous findings documenting sex differences in the correlates of depressive disorders in late life.

Association of cerebral small vessel disease with delusions in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the association between SVD and clinical symptoms exhibited by patients with AD remains unclear. This study examined the association of SVD as observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and cognitive function of patients with probable AD. ⋯ Our results suggest that cerebral SVD observed on MRI of patients with AD is associated with delusions and depression.
