Randomized Controlled TrialDifferent exercise modalities relieve pain syndrome in patients with knee osteoarthritis and modulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: A multiple mode MRI study.
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common degenerative joint disease with no satisfactory intervention. Recently, both physical and mindfulness exercises have received considerable attention for their implications in KOA pain management, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has displayed a critical role in pain modulation. This study aimed to comparatively investigate the modulation effects of different exercises using multidisciplinary measurements. ⋯ Our results suggest that different exercises can modulate both common and unique DLPFC (cognitive control) pathways, and altered DLPFC-SMA rsFC is associated with serum biomarker levels. Our findings also highlight the potentials of neuroimaging biomarkers in predicting the therapeutic effect of mind-body exercises on KOA pain.

IL-17A exacerbates neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration by activating microglia in rodent models of Parkinson's disease.
Neuroinflammation has been involved in pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized neuropathologically by progressive dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra (SN). We recently have shown that helper T (Th)17 cells facilitate dopaminergic neuronal loss in vitro. Herein, we demonstrated that interleukin (IL)-17A, a proinflammatory cytokine produced mainly by Th17 cells, contributed to PD pathogenesis depending on microglia. ⋯ IL-17A-treated microglial medium that contained higher concentration of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α facilitated dopaminergic neuronal death. Further, TNF-α-neutralizing antibody attenuated MPP+-induced neurotoxicity. The findings suggest that IL-17A accelerates neurodegeneration in PD depending on microglial activation and at least partly TNF-α release.

Review Meta AnalysisExercise training, circulating cytokine levels and immune function in cancer survivors: A meta-analysis.
Anti-cancer therapies lead to chronic non-resolving inflammation and reduced immune function. One potential therapy is exercise training, but the effectiveness of these interventions to improve immune-related outcomes, the gaps in the literature, and recommendations to progress the field need to be determined. ⋯ Exercise training reduces pro-inflammatory markers in cancer survivors, with the strongest evidence for combined training and for prostate and breast cancer survivors. Further research is warranted to determine if these changes are clinically relevant or are associated with improvements in symptoms. To strengthen future research, focusing on novel immune populations that include functional parameters and standardized reporting of key immune outcomes is recommended.
