Improving pain management in orthopedic surgical patients with opioid tolerance.
As increasing numbers of the baby boomer generation seek health care, nursing staff educated in the evidence-based practice process can make significant contributions to successful patient outcomes. Health care providers who anticipate the approaching perfect storm in health care and thoughtfully plan, collaborate, and incorporate evidence-based practice methods will be well prepared to improve the quality of care, realize cost savings, and meet the challenges ahead.

Pain, perceptions, and perceived conflicts: improving the patient's experience.
Pain is the number 1 reason patients seek care in an emergency department (ED). A limiting factor for effective pain management may be clinical staff attitudes about pain and pain management. ⋯ Operation Pain and ED pain champions created an environment that promoted enhanced pain management resulting in measurable outcomes. Emergency nurses participating in Operation Pain placed a higher priority on pain management for their patients.

The human genome, which is the complete set of human genetic information, significantly contributes to the health of an individual; it can lead to single or complex medical conditions (including cancer and heart disease) also affected by environmental and behavioral risk factors. To date, the challenges related to human genomics and nursing science focus on the following areas: (1) curriculum application, (2) advanced clinical practice in specific fields, and (3) hands-on bioscience laboratory skills. This review article summarizes current efforts and addresses critical components in nursing genomics.

Nurses and other professionals drawn to health care by their desire to help others may be traumatized because they are involved in situations that bring harm rather than healing to patients. Health systems should develop early warning systems to alert unit or team leaders when health workers are at risk of harm from adverse events. This article focuses on health professionals who become second victims of adverse events that occur to patients.

Water pipe smoking among the young: the rebirth of an old tradition.
This article provides information on the growing threat of water pipe smoking (hookah) around the world and in the United States. Historically an activity of Middle Eastern older adults, the most recent growth in water pipe smoking (WPS) has been among adolescents and young adults. ⋯ To date no interventions have been specifically designed for this form of tobacco use and they are sorely needed. Nurses must continue to teach No Tobacco Use in any form and that means no water pipe smoking must be part of every health message.
