Meta AnalysisEfficacy of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for Lower-Limb Tendinopathy: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, including radial shock wave and focused shock wave types, is widely used for managing tendinopathies. The difference in efficacy between the 2 shock wave characteristics with different dosage levels remains controversial, and the purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine it for patients with lower-limb tendinopathy. ⋯ Advanced ACCREDITATION: The Association of Academic Physiatrists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Association of Academic Physiatrists designates this Journal-based CME activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effects of a Motorized Aquatic Treadmill Exercise Program on Muscle Strength, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and Clinical Function in Subacute Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.
The aim of this study was to assess whether the effects of a motorized aquatic treadmill exercise program improve the isometric strength of the knee muscles, cardiorespiratory fitness, arterial stiffness, motor function, balance, functional outcomes, and quality of life in subacute stroke patients. ⋯ Complete the self-assessment activity and evaluation online at http://www.physiatry.org/JournalCME CME OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this article, the reader should be able to: (1) Articulate the rationale for including walking on an aquatic treadmill in the rehabilitation of subacute stroke patients; (2) Describe the beneficial effects of a motorized aquatic treadmill exercise program in the rehabilitation of subacute stroke patients; and (3) Determine the appropriate indications for incorporating a motorized aquatic treadmill exercise program in the rehabilitation of subacute stroke patients.Level: Advanced ACCREDITATION: The Association of Academic Physiatrists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Association of Academic Physiatrists designates this Journal-based CME activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Randomized Controlled TrialRecovery in the Severely Impaired Arm Post-Stroke After Mirror Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Study.
This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of mirror therapy on recovery in the severely impaired arm after stroke. ⋯ Mirror therapy or control therapy, which involved exercises concurrently for the paretic and unaffected arms during subacute stroke, promoted similar motor recovery in the severely impaired arm.

Long-Term Retention of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training During Residency.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation developed milestones for evaluation of resident physicians that include proper musculoskeletal ultrasound examination of major joints. To date, there have been no published data demonstrating acquisition and retention of these skills and correlation with the milestone evaluation. The investigators developed and implemented a curriculum in musculoskeletal ultrasound examination for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents at a large academic medical center. ⋯ From 2013 to 2017, 30 physical medicine and rehabilitation residents were trained and evaluated. The results, based on objective structured clinical examination scores, showed that most residents achieved the appropriate level of competency for their year. A blended, standardized curriculum in musculoskeletal ultrasound instruction with assessment by an objective structured clinical examination can be used to evaluate musculoskeletal ultrasound skills and can help align this education with residency milestones.
