This study was performed to determine the effects of glutamine enriched total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on the patients with acute pancreatitis (AP). ⋯ The results of this study have shown that glutamine supplementation to TPN have beneficial effects on the prevention of complications in patients with AP.

To analyze compliance with the current European and Spanish nutritional objectives in a representative sample from Catalonia, a Spanish Mediterranean region; and to examine relationships between diet and plasma fatty acid composition. ⋯ This study was supported by the Catalan Department of Health, the Nutrition Catalan Centre of the Institute of Catalan Studies, and Mercadona SA.

Recent developments in micro-emulsification technology have allowed the fortification of foods with long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) without the undesirable fish odour/taste and with reasonable shelf life. The effects of supplementing the diets of people with diabetes type II with a hummus-based dip enriched with long-chain n-3PUFA on plasma fatty acid composition and lipid levels were examined. ⋯ These results demonstrate that n-3PUFA are readily bioavailable from the fortified dip matrix and alter the plasma lipid profile.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) or sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) is the largest component of total energy expenditure (EE). An accurate prediction of BMR or SMR is needed to accurately predict total EE or physical activity EE for each individual. However, large variability in BMR and SMR has been reported. ⋯ SMR can be predicted more accurately than previously reported, which indicates that SMR interindividual variability is smaller than expected, at least for Japanese subjects. The prediction equations for SMR are preferable to those for BMR because the former exhibits a smaller prediction error than the latter.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of pre-analytical factors on the short and long term stability of ascorbic acid (AA), the main form of vitamin C in whole blood and plasma. The effects of various anticoagulants, acidification, storage temperature and time were tested. A recently developed fast and sensitive HPLC method was used to measure AA levels. ⋯ In conclusion, heparin tubes should be used for blood sample collection. As AA is rapidly degraded, sample collection should be followed by immediate centrifugation and plasma acidification. To avoid further degradation during sample handling, samples should be stored at -70 degrees C without delay and analyzed within 80 days.
