Malnutrition is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and affects both morbidity and mortality. The growth hormone-dependent insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I may be a good marker of malnutrition because of its short half-life. In the present study, we investigate the influence of decreasing residual renal function as well as of chronic inflammation on the IGF system to assess its usefulness in this patient group. ⋯ Both IGF-I and IGFBP-1 appear to correlate well with markers of protein-energy malnutrition and sarcopenia. However, IGF-I is also influenced by age, whereas IGFBP-1 is influenced by glucose metabolism. IGFBP-3 does not correlate with nutritional status in ESRD, perhaps because of a strong association with inflammation.

Effects of short-term folic acid and/or riboflavin supplementation on serum folate and plasma total homocysteine concentrations in young Japanese male subjects.
To investigate the effects of short-term folic acid and/or riboflavin supplementation on serum folate and plasma plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations in young Japanese male subjects. ⋯ Supplementation with folic acid, 800 microg/day, for 2 weeks, increased the serum and red blood cell folate concentrations and decreased the plasma tHcy concentrations in healthy young male subjects. Riboflavin supplementation may have blunted the effect of folic acid, which resulted in a diminished reduction of tHcy in our subjects.

A combination of fibre-rich rye bread and yoghurt containing Lactobacillus GG improves bowel function in women with self-reported constipation.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of fibre-rich rye bread and yoghurt containing Lactobacillus GG (LGG) on intestinal transit time and bowel function, and to test whether they have an interaction in cases of self-reported constipation. ⋯ Valio Ltd, R&D, and Fazer Bakeries Ltd.

Pomegranate juice supplementation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a 5-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of antioxidant polyphenol-rich pomegranate juice (PJ) supplementation for 5 weeks on patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), since the oxidative stress plays a major role in the evolution and pathophysiology of COPD. ⋯ 'Fundación Séneca' (Murcia, Spain), Project PB/18/FS/02 and Spanish CICYT, Project AGL2003-02195.
