To present the current burden of mortality attributable to some of the main cardiovascular risk factors in adults in Spain. ⋯ Mortality attributable to the risk factors studied is a major avoidable public health problem in Spain. The results presented are only illustrative but clearly show that there is considerable scope for prevention.

A systematic review of protein and energy supplementation for hip fracture aftercare in older people.
To evaluate whether protein and energy supplementation influences recovery after hip fracture. ⋯ Based on limited evidence, oral protein and energy supplementation after hip fracture may reduce unfavourable outcome. Further evidence from good-quality randomised trials is required to inform clinical practice.

The first health and lifestyle survey of Irish adults was carried out in 1998 and aimed to describe the health-related lifestyle behaviours of a cross-section of various population strata residing in the Republic of Ireland. This paper reports on the social variation in nutrient intake. ⋯ For the first time, quantification of nutrient intake in the different social groups in Ireland has been undertaken. A healthy balance of energy derived from fat, protein and carbohydrate is best achieved among respondents from higher social positions. The positive relation observed with healthy food intake and increasing education level was also present in macronutrient intake and a clear gender and social support interplay was seen in the nutrient intake levels.

To investigate the relation between (1) cardiorespiratory fitness and plasma saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and (2) the interactions between cardiorespiratory fitness, dietary fat intake and plasma fatty acid composition. ⋯ Different levels in cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with different levels in plasma saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and lead to modifications in the association between dietary and plasma fatty acids. These findings can perhaps be explained by a reduced hepatic fatty acid and lipoprotein synthesis as well as by an enhanced muscular lipid utilization, which are commonly seen in those who are physically active and who exhibit a higher level of fitness.

Increased lipid peroxidation during long-term intervention with high doses of n-3 fatty acids (PUFAs) following an acute myocardial infarction.
To assess the oxidative burden of a highly concentrated compound of n-3 PUFAs as compared to corn oil by measuring thiobarbituric acid-malondialdehyde complex (TBA-MDA) by HPLC. We also studied the influence on TBA-MDA of statins combined with n-3 PUFAs or corn oil. ⋯ : Pharmacia A/S and Pronova A/S, Norway.
