Comparative StudyComparison of modern risk scores in predicting operative mortality for patients undergoing aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis.
The aim of our study was to examine and compare the predictive value of operative mortality of the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II, the Society of Thoracic surgeons (STS) score, the Ambler score, and the Japan score in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis (AS). ⋯ The EuroSCORE II and the Japan score showed superior ability of calibration, but the STS score and the Ambler score overestimated the risk. However, the discrimination power was similar among the four risk scores. In the last quartile of risk, the EuroSCORE II gave an excellent predictive performance.

Pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease: The prognostic implications of diastolic pulmonary vascular pressure gradient.
Compared to transpulmonary pressure gradient (TPPG), diastolic pulmonary vascular pressure gradient (DPG) may be a more sensitive and specific indicator for pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to left heart disease (LHD) with significant pulmonary vascular disease (PVD). The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and clinical features of PH-LHD with PVD classified by DPG and TPPG. ⋯ PH-LHD with PVD classified by DPG was significantly associated with poor long-term clinical outcomes, whereas the association between PH-LHD with PVD classified by TPPG and clinical outcomes did not reach statistical significance. However, further studies are needed, because there was no substantial difference in clinical outcomes between PH-LHD with PVD classified by DPG and PH-LHD with PVD classified by TPPG.

Meta AnalysisSutureless aortic valve replacement may improve early mortality compared with transcatheter aortic valve implantation: A meta-analysis of comparative studies.
To determine which improves clinical outcomes more, sutureless (including rapid-deployment) aortic valve replacement (AVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), we performed a meta-analysis of comparative studies. ⋯ Compared with TAVI, sutureless AVR may be associated with a reduction in early mortality and postoperative paravalvular AR.

Association between dental caries and out-of-hospital cardiac arrests of cardiac origin in Japan.
Oral infection contributes to atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. We hypothesized that dental caries may be associated with out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) of cardiac origin, but not non-cardiac origin. ⋯ While oral hygiene is important in all age groups, it may be particularly associated with OHCAs of cardiac origin in males over 65 years.
