Pericardial effusion is associated with high mortality in oncology. The etiology of infectious pericarditis and iatrogenic effects of previous radio-/chemotherapy may be always suspected, especially when a subsequent episode is observed. ⋯ Efficacy of rescue intrapericardial chemotherapy with cisplatin is independent of parameters of hemodynamic instability and levels of inflammatory markers in recurrent pericardial effusion.

Certain microRNAs (miRs) present in human plasma are candidate biomarkers for cardiovascular diseases, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We examined the expression of two cardiac-specific miRs (miR-208b and miR-499) in a Greek pathological population. ⋯ We showed, for the first time, that these miRs could be used as AMI biomarkers in our population as well. Our data are in agreement with those of studies based on different population groups and further strengthen the observation that plasma levels of circulating miR-208b and miR-499 could serve as potential AMI biomarkers.

This study aimed to report a balneotherapy-based psoriasis rehabilitation protocol and assess its effectivity. ⋯ After completing the 3-week-long spa therapy based rehabilitation, both PASI score and CRP levels showed improvement of psoriasis. The complex spa therapy used during the rehabilitation is an effective tool to reduce the symptoms of psoriasis and improve the patient's well-being.

Severe sepsis is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Inflammation and coagulation play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of sepsis leading to multiple organ failure, especially in the liver. The aim of the present study was to assess the mechanism from sepsis to liver damage in a mouse model. ⋯ We conclude that NET formation and intravasated platelet aggregation are the first steps from sepsis to liver damage, and that extravasated platelet aggregation promoted by NET-facilitated detachment of sinusoidal endothelial cells is the origin of sepsis-induced liver dysfunction.

Colorectal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are a rare manifestation of colorectal neoplasia, requiring for radical dissection of the regional lymph nodes along with colorectal resection similar to that required for colorectal cancer. However, thus far, no reports have described the ability of computed tomography (CT) to predict lymph node involvement. In this study, we revealed the prediction rate of lymph node metastasis using contrast-enhanced CT. ⋯ CT images provide predictive information for lymph node metastasis with a high rate of accuracy.
