Simple modifications in operating room processes to reduce the times and costs associated with robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) is the most expensive, yet most common, surgical treatment for patients with prostate cancer. Furthermore, its popularity continues to grow despite the lack of evidence for functional and oncologic superiority over other treatments. As a result, we modified operating room (OR) processes to determine if the times and costs that are associated with RALRP in an academic setting could be reduced. ⋯ Using simple modifications, it is possible that RALRP efficiency can be improved by decreasing its associated times and costs. These modifications were implemented in an academic setting but may be used in any institution. These modifications represent an initial attempt to improve RALRP cost-competitiveness with other treatment modalities.

Use of neurosurgical patties for dissection in laparoscopic procedures of the urinary tract.
Minimal bleeding during endoscopic surgery of the urinary tract may prevent optimum vision. We used neurosurgical patties for dissection during our laparoscopic procedures in the pediatric population and aimed to describe this technique as an alternative to standard ways of dissection during laparoscopic procedures. We have performed 21 procedures, including pyeloplasties, nephrectomies, and management of duplication anomalies, by using 0.5 inch Codman neurosurgical patties.™ Use of neurosurgical patties during laparoscopic urologic procedures yields a clear vision that enables the surgeon to perform the procedure more comfortably and effectively.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy of levobupivacaine infiltration to nephrosthomy tract in combination with intravenous paracetamol on postoperative analgesia in percutaneous nephrolithotomy patients.
To evaluate the efficacy of intraoperative local anesthetic infiltration in combination with intravenous paracetamol infusion on postoperative pain management in patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). ⋯ Levobupivacaine infiltration through the nephrostomy tract in combination with intravenous paracetamol infusion was shown to be safe and efficacious as an analgesia method after PCNL.

Laparoendoscopic single-site porcine nephrectomy using a novel valveless trocar system.
The AirSeal™ access system is a novel laparoscopic trocar that uses airflow to create insufflation pressure without the need for a physical seal or valve. By eliminating all valve elements within the lumen of the canula, the port provides a platform that accommodates multiple instruments of any diameter, shape, or combination and is ideally suited for laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS). We present our initial experience with valveless trocars in traditional urologic laparoscopic cases and a porcine LESS nephrectomy series. ⋯ The initial experience with the AirSeal valveless trocar system in LESS is encouraging. This technology may offer significant benefits over traditional laparoscopic trocars and single -port platforms and appears particularly suited to facilitate LESS.

Randomized clinical trials presented at the World Congress of Endourology: how is the quality of reporting?
To assess the quality of reporting of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) presented in abstract form at the annual World Congress of Endourology (WCE) and evaluate their course of subsequent publication. ⋯ Although representing a small portion of the overall number of abstracts, there has been a steady increase of presentation of RCTs at the WCE over the assessed 3-year period. Most of the time they are recognized as RCTs in the abstract title. When applying the CONSORT criteria, necessary information to assess their methodologic quality is incomplete in some cases.
