Surgery for thoracic disc herniation and spinal stenosis is comparatively rare and often demanding. The goal is to achieve sufficient decompression without manipulating the spinal cord. Individual planning and various surgical techniques and approaches are required. ⋯ The instruments are available for clinical use and have been established for years in other operations on the entire spine. Referred pain in the anterior knee joint is the most common symptom in hip disease patients. The development of referred pain is considered to be related to dichotomizing peripheral sensory fibers. However, no gross anatomical findings identify any dichotomizing fibers innervating both the hip and knee joints. ⋯ These gross anatomical findings suggested that dichotomizing peripheral sensory fibers innervate the hip and knee joints and these could relate to the referred pain confirmed in the anterior knee joints of patients with hip disease. A novel clinical test for partial tears of the distal biceps brachii tendon: The TILT sign.
Partial tears of the distal biceps brachii tendon are rare. A complete tear of the distal biceps brachii tendon is readily diagnosed on the basis of history and physical examination and has a well-described clinical presentation of acute pain in the antecubital fossa, localized tenderness, swelling, palpable defect, positive hook test, and weakness in forearm supination and elbow flexion. Partial tears, on the other hand, can present more subtly and remain a diagnostic challenge. ⋯ This simple diagnostic maneuver could facilitate earlier detection of these injuries. Clin. Anatomical variations in the suprascapular nerve (SSN) and its depth in the suprascapular notch can make it difficult to target with ultrasonography (US). One alternative could be a proximal approach to the SSN, if US provides a reliable description of its origin (orSSN). The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate that US can reliably locate the orSSN. ⋯ US is a valid modality for describing and pinpointing the orSSN, irrespective of patient morphology. The issue of predatory journals has become increasingly more prevalent over the past decade, as the open-access model of publishing has gained prominence. Although the open-access model is well intentioned to increase accessibility of biomedical research, it is vulnerable to exploitation by those looking to corrupt medical academia and circumvent ethics and research standards. Predatory journals will achieve publication by either soliciting unsuspecting researchers who have legitimate research but fall victim to these predators or researchers looking to quickly publish their research without a thorough review process. ⋯ A number of steps can be taken to prevent the spread and increase awareness of predatory publishers, and these must be done to maintain the integrity of medical academia.
