Anatomy of the hip capsule and pericapsular structures: A cadaveric study.
The anatomical literature contains relatively little qualitative or quantitative information regarding the anatomy of the hip joint capsule and its relationship to the surrounding pericapsular structures. We aimed to provide a detailed description of the anatomy of these relationships in a cadaveric study. Dissections of 11 nonpaired, fresh-frozen cadaveric hips were performed, documenting capsular dimensions and attachments to pericapsular structures including the rectus femoris, gluteus minimus, iliocapsularis, and piriformis and short external rotator muscles. ⋯ There are complex associations among these structures, yet the surrounding layers of the capsule are confluent in predictable relationships. Knowledge of the intricate relationship between the hip capsule and pericapsular structures presented here will be useful for surgeons as they perform the precise and specific capsular releases required by various operative procedures. This study also provides information that can lead to further biomechanical, radiographic, and clinical studies on these structures.

This review suggests why some discs degenerate rather than age normally. Intervertebral discs are avascular pads of fibrocartilage that allow movement between vertebral bodies. Human discs have a low cell density and a limited ability to adapt to mechanical demands. ⋯ We conclude that some discs degenerate because they are disrupted by excessive mechanical loading. This can occur without trauma if tissues are weakened by age and genetic inheritance. Moderate mechanical loading, in contrast, strengthens all spinal tissues, including discs.

Quantitative, qualitative, and innovative application of bibliometric research performance indicators to anatomy and radiology research and education can enhance cross-fertilization between the two disciplines. We aim to use these indicators to identify long-term trends in dissemination of publications in neuroimaging anatomy (including both productivity and citation rates), which has subjectively waned in prestige during recent years. We examined publications over the last 40 years in two neuroradiological journals, AJNR and Neuroradiology, and selected and categorized all neuroimaging anatomy research articles according to theme and type. ⋯ CHL-10 trends demonstrated that more recently published anatomy articles were likely to take longer to reach peak citation rate. Bibliometric analysis suggests that anatomical research in neuroradiology is not languishing. This novel analytical approach can be applied to other aspects of neuroimaging research, and within other subspecialties in radiology and anatomy, and also to foster anatomical education.

Occipital neuralgia is a debilitating disorder first described in 1821 as recurrent headaches localized in the occipital region. Other symptoms that have been associated with this condition include paroxysmal burning and aching pain in the distribution of the greater, lesser, or third occipital nerves. ⋯ Occipital neuralgia is a multifactorial problem where multiple anatomic areas/structures may be involved with this pathology. A review of these etiologies may provide guidance in better understanding occipital neuralgia.

Genitofemoral neuralgia is a cause of neuropathic pain that is often debilitating in nature. It is characterized by chronic neuropathic groin pain that is localized along the distribution of the genitofemoral nerve. The symptoms include groin pain, paresthesias, and burning sensation spreading from the lower abdomen to the medial aspect of the thigh. ⋯ Once a diagnosis has been made, there exist several treatment options for genitofemoral neuralgia ranging from medical management, non-invasive injections, and surgery. Literature has also brought light to radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation performed under ultrasound guidance as emerging treatments. The aim of the current article is to review the anatomy, diagnostic techniques, and treatment options for patients with genitofemoral neuralgia.
