This study sought to develop and examine preliminary validity of the NCCN-FACT Ovarian Symptom Index-18 (NFOSI-18), a new ovarian cancer-specific symptom index comprised of symptoms rated as highest priority by both oncology clinical experts and women with advanced ovarian cancer. ⋯ The NFOSI-18 shows preliminary evidence for reliability and validity as a brief assessment of the most important symptoms associated with treatment for advanced ovarian cancer.

Surgical technique of diaphragm full-thickness resection and trans-diaphragmatic decompression of pneumothorax during cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer.
To describe the technique and short-term post-operative outcomes associated with diaphragm full-thickness resection (FTR) and intraoperative trans-diaphragmatic decompression of the resultant pneumothorax (TDDP). ⋯ The technique of TDDP eliminates the need of intraoperative and post-operative thoracostomy tube/thoracentesis in 95.1% of patients undergoing diaphragm FTR as a component of ovarian cancer cytoreductive surgery.

Vulvar field resection: novel approach to the surgical treatment of vulvar cancer based on ontogenetic anatomy.
Current local treatment of vulvar cancer is wide tumor excision and radical vulvectomy based on functional anatomy established from the adult and on the view of radial progressive tumor permeation. Standard surgery is associated with a considerable local failure rate and severe disturbance of the patients' body image. Vulvar field resection (VFR) is based on ontogenetic anatomy and on the concept of local tumor spread within permissive compartments. VFR combined with anatomical reconstruction (AR) is proposed as a new surgical approach to the treatment of vulvar cancer. ⋯ Vulvar cancer permeates within ontogenetic tissue compartments and surgical treatment with VFR and AR appears to be safe and effective. Patients should benefit from the new approach as local tumor control is high and the preserved tissue can be successfully used for restoration of vulvar form and function. Confirmatory trials with more patients and longer follow-up are suggested.

Multicenter StudyA Phase II, open-label study evaluating pazopanib in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer.
The progression-free and median survival of patients with advanced ovarian cancer has not appreciably improved over the last decade. Novel targeted therapies, particularly antiangiogenic agents, may potentially improve clinical outcomes in patients with ovarian cancer. This phase II, open-label study evaluated oral pazopanib monotherapy in patients with low-volume recurrent ovarian cancer. ⋯ Pazopanib monotherapy was relatively well tolerated, with toxicity similar to other small-molecule, oral angiogenesis inhibitors, and demonstrated promising single-agent activity in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. Further studies evaluating the potential role of pazopanib in patients with ovarian cancer are ongoing.

Hospice enrollment for terminally ill patients with gynecologic malignancies: impact on outcomes and interventions.
To determine survival and interventions for patients with non-curative gynecologic malignancies based on supportive care enrollment. ⋯ While retrospective reviews evaluating hospice are challenging, our data suggest no detrimental impact on survival for hospice patients. Continued evaluation for patients at the end-of-life is necessary in order to optimize resource utilization.
