The aim of this study was to evaluate additional error in estimating red cell loss during abdominal hysterectomy. ⋯ These findings suggest that other fluid, probably lymph, contributes to the dilution of red cells in the container and increases the estimated blood volume loss during surgery. Estimation of red cell surgical blood loss becomes less accurate as the length and radical nature of the surgery increase.

Identification of risk factors for requiring transfusion during front-line chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.
Anemia requiring red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is common in ovarian cancer (OC) patients receiving post-debulking surgery chemotherapy. Erythropoietin use has been shown to decrease transfusion requirements in patients receiving chemotherapy. We sought to identify pretreatment risk factors that could identify patients at increased risk for requiring RBC transfusion during first-line treatment for ovarian cancer. ⋯ Ovarian cancer patients frequently require RBC transfusion during postdebulking platinum-paclitaxel chemotherapy. Patients with prechemotherapy hemoglobin <10 g/dL and those receiving carboplatin-paclitaxel are at increased risk of requiring RBC transfusion. Early initiation of erythropoietin use in such patients may reduce transfusion needs.

A descriptive study was performed to evaluate the variables which influence the quality of life of women with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment. ⋯ The EORTC QLQ-C30 can be used to test clinical assumptions and to influence treatment programs of women with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The results confirmed the assumption that carboplatin has less of an impact on QoL than cisplatin. Also, the finding of improvements in QoL over time, for the women with recurrent disease, supports the use of carboplatin as palliative treatment. The differences observed in QoL between survivors and nonsurvivors 12 months after starting treatment may help identify high-risk patients for closer monitoring. Brief, structured QoL assessments before clinic appointments may be useful for improving the overall care of ovarian cancer patients.

Multicenter StudyAnalysis of treatment failures and survival of patients with fallopian tube carcinoma: a cooperation task force (CTF) study.
The objective of this retrospective multicenter study was to assess the pattern of failures and survival of patients with primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube. ⋯ Primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube shares several biological and clinical features with ovarian carcinoma. However, when compared with the latter, fallopian tube carcinoma more often tends to recur in retroperitoneal nodes and distant sites. Stage, patient age, and, among patients with advanced disease, residual tumor after initial surgery represent important prognostic variables for survival.

Extended surgical staging for uterine papillary serous carcinoma: survival outcome of locoregional (Stage I-III) disease.
The aim of this study was to evaluate survival outcome in patients with locoregional uterine papillary serous carcinoma (UPSC) after extended surgical staging (ESS). ⋯ Patients with locoregional UPSC following ESS have a more favorable prognosis than previously thought. The additional information provided by ESS facilitates the selection of adjuvant therapy. Whole pelvic RT is recommended for patients with Stage I/II disease. Pathologic Stage III disease portends a significant risk of distant recurrence. For these patients, administration of adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered in addition to directed RT.
