The relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is unclear. This study aimed to estimate SB prevalence in an adolescent population and to investigate the relationship between SB frequency and prevalence of TMD signs/symptoms. ⋯ These results suggest that the presence of TMJ clicking was closely related to severe SB in an adolescent population.

To examine whether there is a gender-dependent risk profile for signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a population-based sample. ⋯ Except for some general health conditions and bruxism, the hypothesis of a gender-dependent risk profile for signs of TMD is partly supported. The results of this study indicate that TMD is a complex disorder associated with mixed etiologic factors between genders.

Cervicofacial emphysema is a well-known complication associated with the use of a high-speed air turbine. However, retropharyngeal emphysema or pneumomediastinum in the absence of severe trauma is rare. ⋯ This article reports a case of gas diffusion into the mediastinum after dental preparatory treatment for a single-tooth crown. Pneumomediastinum should be considered whenever there are anamnestic data for retrosternal chest pain accompanied by dysphagia, dysphonia, or dyspnea caused by cervicofacial emphysema after dental treatment.
