The aim of this prospective study was to assess the extent of dissemination of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae at the hospital level in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). ⋯ The present study highlighted the emergence and dissemination of CTX-M-15-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae in the UAE. This is the first report of SHV-28-producing Enterobacteriaceae in the country.

To determine the frequency of occurrence of hypoadrenalism in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and document the clinical correlates of hypoadrenalism for this group of patients. ⋯ The prevalence of hypoadrenalism in our patients with HIV infection was high and the clinical features were comparable in subjects with normal and subnormal cortisol levels.

To report a case with dynamic ST segment elevation suggestive of anteroseptal acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that proved to be bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). ⋯ This report emphasizes the role of evolving electrocardiographic changes in the diagnosis of PTE, particularly in patients with chest pain and ST segment elevation suggestive of acute coronary syndrome.

To determine the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria among prospective blood donors and its effect on some hematological parameters. ⋯ Asymptomatic malaria is prevalent among blood donors in the study area and is associated with thrombocytopenia.
