To assess the normal sonographic values of renal length and cortical thickness in healthy adults and establish reference ranges in our population for comparison when examining renal disease. ⋯ Renal length and cortical thickness did not vary significantly with age. Renal length correlated well with weight and BMI but not with height. Hence, establishing normal ranges of renal parameters is essential for comparison in situations where possible renal disease is being investigated.

To report a case of rectal cancer in a patient with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS). ⋯ This case showed that rectal carcinoma should be considered for young patients with PJS.

To assess the degree of immunosuppressive medication adherence in kidney transplant patients (KTPs) and to determine if there is a difference in the rate of adherence to tacrolimus (Tac), cyclosporine (CsA) and sirolimus (Sir). ⋯ The KTPs in this study demonstrated a high level of adherence. Nonadherence was associated with worse graft function and a lower Tac level. Knowledge about the degree of adherence could help the early identification of nonadherent patients and the development of strategies to improve this.

To evaluate the relationship between the occurrence of priapism and important steady-state clinical and laboratory parameters in homozygous sickle cell disease (SCD). ⋯ About 1 in 4 of all homozygous older SCD patients had priapism, and an approximately similar ratio developed erectile dysfunction; they also had lower steady-state leucocyte counts. Other clinical and laboratory indicators of disease severity in SCD did not positively correlate with the occurrence of priapism, and this may imply an alternative pathogenetic mechanism.

To report a rare case of synchronous marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) signet ring cell carcinoma occurring as a collision tumour in the stomach. ⋯ This case highlighted the importance of a careful evaluation of the accompanying lymphoid population in the biopsy samples of gastric adenocarcinoma and underlined the need for multiple endoscopic biopsies to detect these rare synchronous tumours.
