The purpose of the present study was to determine the local recurrence rate, risk of dedifferentiation, and distant metastasis after surgical excision of intramuscular lipomas (IML) and atypical lipomatous tumors (ALT). ⋯ Both IML and ALT showed a low recurrence rate when removed surgically from the extremities or trunk wall with intended marginal resection. No distant metastases were observed in any of the groups. It, therefore, seems safe to treat these tumors with marginal resection.

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer--related deaths worldwide, and the overall 5-year survival rate of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remained low. -MicroRNAs had been confirmed to be an important regulator in tumor progression, and they could serve as either tumor promoters or suppressors in NSCLC. ⋯ Our findings suggest that miR-421 might be a promising prognostic and therapeutic target for NSCLC.

In order to investigate human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes predisposing to primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS), we conducted an association study using HLA loci (A, B, and DRB1) and 9 polymorphic microsatellite markers spanning the HLA region in pSS patients as compared to healthy individuals. ⋯ The results of this study support the hypothesis of the existence of a susceptibility gene for pSS located in the HLA class I and III regions.

The aim of this systematic review was to consolidate studies to determine whether root cause analysis (RCA) is an adequate method to decrease recurrence of avoidable adverse events (AAEs). ⋯ RCA is a useful tool for the identification of the remote and immediate causes of safety incidents, but not for implementing effective measures to prevent their recurrence.

Achilles tendon lengthening (ATL) is one of the most commonly performed procedures in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. An appropriate adjustment of the amount of ATL is crucial to avoid insufficient or excessive lengthening. However, there is currently no effective method to preoperatively calculate the tendon length needed for equinus deformity correction. Thus, in this study we evaluated the accuracy of a calculation using a mathematical model based on the law of cosines. ⋯ The required dimension of ATL can be calculated preoperatively using the mathematical formula presented here. The advantages of this approach are that it allows accurate tendon lengthening and reduces the size of the surgical incision.
