Satisfactory masticatory function is a significant indicator of improved oral health-related quality of life in older adults, either with or without artificial teeth. The purpose of this study was to examine masticatory performance of older adults with different prosthodontic reconstructions and occlusion, as well as to compare subjective and objective assessment of chewing performance. ⋯ This study revealed a strong positive correlation between the subjective masticatory assessment in older adults using the validated questionnaire and the objective clinical test of the mixing ability of two chewing gums. Our data on influence of the number and the type of FTU on masticatory performance will be valuable when planning prosthodontic therapy.

Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases. Many studies have pointed out that the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), which demonstrates plasma atherogenicity, is correlated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular morbidity, atherosclerosis, and severity of coronary artery disease. Within this context, we tried to evaluate the correlation between nondipping circadian pattern and AIP. ⋯ AIP levels are higher in patients with nondipping pattern compared to dipper patients. Additionally, higher levels of AIP are independently associated with the presence of the nondipping pattern in hypertensive patients.

Tei index (TI) is a combined myocardial performance index for overall cardiac function, the sensitivity of which seems to be better than that of systolic and diastolic parameters alone. Evidence for TI in the context of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is currently limited, which is why we chose to investigate this parameter in affected patients. ⋯ The discriminatory ability of TI was better than that of other echocardiographic parameters such as LV systolic function. Due to the simple, fast, and inexpensive way of calculating TI, diagnostic workup with conventional parameters could be complemented by TI in patients with suspected TTS.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of various diseases. Quantitative PCR is the most frequently used method of measuring expression levels of miRNA. ⋯ Researchers tend to prefer the most stable reference genes in each experiment. The review includes reference genes for the following tissue types: gliomas, lung cancer, melanoma, gastric cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, rectal cancer, blood tumors, and placental tissues.

Pulmonary artery stump thrombosis (PAST) following pneumonectomies/lobectomies is rare; its clinical importance is unknown. The objectives of this study were to analyze the prevalence and risk factors of PAST and the clinical significance in patients with pneumonectomy/lobectomy. ⋯ PAST was detected in 4.5% of our subjects undergoing lobectomy/pneumonectomy. PAST was found to be significantly higher in subjects who underwent pneumonectomy, those with longer pulmonary artery stump, and those with pulmonary artery stump ligated by using stapler.
