Coronary artery fistulas connecting coronary arteries to cardiac cavities are rare but clinically significant anomalies. ⋯ The present case describes extensive fistulas complicated with fatal ventricular arrhythmias due to ischemia and left ventricle dysfunction. A cardioverter defibrillator was implanted to prevent sudden cardiac death.

Approximately 15% of all rare diseases occur with orofacial manifestations. Symptoms and manifestations of relevance to orthodontists represent a considerable proportion of these diseases and require appropriate strategies for their treatment. This article provides an overview of the orthodontically relevant manifestations of rare diseases. ⋯ Orthodontics play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of orofacial manifestations in rare diseases. Databases such as ROMSE are a first step toward providing valid information in publicly accessible databases.

Thyroid Nodules Are More Prevalent in Subjects with Colon Polyps, Independent of Insulin Resistance.
Colorectal polyps and thyroid nodules are common disorders linked to hyperinsulinemia and metabolic syndrome (Mets). The direct association between these two diseases is not clear. We aimed to analyze the prevalence of thyroid nodules in subjects with and without colorectal polyps. The secondary aim was to establish the prevalence of Mets and its parameters in both disorders and to determine if insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are common underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. ⋯ These results may support the presence of other common mechanisms in the development of these two pathologies other than insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia.

A global trend in female leadership roles in the medical profession is on the rise, and females have been taking up leadership roles in varying and increasing levels. This study aims to identify changes in trends in the medical field in terms of gender in the last decade in Kuwait. ⋯ While women make up more than half of medical graduates in Kuwait at present, significant barriers had restricted their entry into formal medical leadership roles in the past. However, it is now seen that females currently occupy more leadership positions in government hospitals in Kuwait.

Prenatal exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) dampens hippocampal neurogenesis. This effect is associated with increased anxiety-like behavior in adult offspring. Furthermore, blocking serotonin transporters (SERT) promotes adult neurogenesis. Previous studies were performed largely in males. Therefore, we explored the impact of prenatal LPS on neurogenesis, SERT expression in the hippocampus, and anxiety-like behavior in female rats during prepubertal and adulthood stages. ⋯ Prenatal LPS-induced reduction in neurogenesis was dissociated from anxiety-like behavior in adult female rats. Furthermore, the long-lasting impact of prenatal LPS on neurogenesis in female offspring was age-dependent.
