Previous clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy, safety, effectiveness and efficiency of neuroreflexotherapy (NRT) in the treatment of subacute and chronic non-specific low back pain. The goal of this study was to describe the implementation of this method into the Spanish National Health System, to assess the viability of the referral protocol, and to obtain the data required for planning the widespread use of this technology. ⋯ The method described allows NRT to be included in routine clinical practice within the Spanish National Health System under the conditions in which it was evaluated in previous randomized controlled trials. The referral protocol that was used generates a high rate of appropriate referrals, a high degree of satisfaction among patients and physicians, and clinical results that are consistent with the effectiveness and safety previously demonstrated for this technology.

Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) are targeted at health professionals and patients providing information for decision-making. They are aimed at reducing variations in medical practice in order to guarantee an optimum level of quality and improve health care. CPG are based on systematic reviews of biomedical literature and they recommend different clinical intervention strategies depending on the quality of scientific evidence on which they are based. ⋯ Finally, another difficulty that should be mentioned is that of CPG implementation, and in order to succeed in it, there is still much left to do in the health sciences field. Nevertheless, if there is not a good product to implement, the strategies used to do it will not be very helpful. Thus, we need to focus our efforts on the development of high quality CPG.

To evaluate the readability of the informed consent documents (ICD) used in the health centers of Asturias (Spain) with the aim of verifying whether the ICD are understandable and sufficient as a vehicle of information to empower patients to participate in decisions related to their diagnosis and treatment. ⋯ ICD written in Spanish achieved low readability scores in the Flesch index and require corrective measures. Three quarters of the ICD were acceptable due to the use of simple sentences in the text. We believe that readability indexes should be used when drafting or improving informed consent documents.

As tuberculosis control programs have reached acceptable levels in the identification and treatment of persons with active tuberculosis, the next step should be to develop methods of preventing new cases. Persons with latent tuberculosis infection (LTI) are considered to have a higher risk of developing active tuberculosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of LTI and its associated factors in the contacts of tuberculosis patients. ⋯ The overall prevalence of LTI in the contacts of patients with tuberculosis was high. Among the factors studied, delayed treatment in the index case was independently associated with the frequency of LTI in tuberculosis contacts. Measures for the early diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis should be intensified.
