[Prospective study on injuries of the German national ice hockey teams in more than 1000 games].
Due to the fast and physical nature of the game, prevention of injuries is an important issue in ice hockey. The injuries of the German male senior and junior (U16, U17, U18, U19, U20) national ice hockey teams were documented and analyzed in 1006 games between 1986 and 2006. This unique long observation period over 20 years, as well as the standardized protocol of documentation provides reliable data concerning injury pattern in German international ice hockey. ⋯ The increasing speed and physical energy in international ice-hockey make the game unique and fascinating. Therefore, the aim must be to decrease the number and above all the severity of injuries by further development and adjustment of the player's equipment. Also, a better cooperation of players, coaches, sports medicine and referees seems to be necessary for injury prevention in the future.

Case Reports[The operative treatment of rhizarthrosis for patients with extreme exposure of the hand by athletic activities--is the trapeziectomy with interposition of an pyrocarbon spacer a option for treatment?].
The rhizarthrosis is the most common degenerative joint disease of the hand. Incidence is detected around 10 %. For the treatment of rhizarthrosis different conservative and surgical methods are available. As many publications deal with the outcome of different surgical procedures. However there are no experiences in possibility of resuming an extreme exposure of the hand by athletic activities and the relevant timeframe between surgical treatment and the resumption as well as which of the competing surgical procedures you should suggest the patient. ⋯ The trapeziectomy with interposition of an pyrocarbonspacer is a worthfull alternative compared to other established operative techniques. The demonstrated casuistic proves that this treatment matches both the high and multiaxial stress on the first ray of athletes. Four dislocations in the examined collective and the price of the implant of 930 Euro has to be discussed critically.

Case Reports[Exertional compartment syndrome of the lower leg and common peroneal nerve palsy as combined injury after weight lifting].
While the compartment syndrome after traumatic injury is a well-known entity and well recognised, an exercise-induced acute compartment syndrome is seldom and often missed. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can result in a poor outcome such as loss of function or limb. ⋯ A thorough case history provided the clue to understand the resulting pathology. This case shows again the necessity of good medical assistance for athletes in leisure-time sport activities.

Clinical Trial[Immobilisation of the shoulder in external rotation after traumatic first-time dislocation--what is reasonable? A retrospective survey].
Immobilisation in external rotation has become a new option in the therapy of the traumatically dislocated shoulder. Brace comfort and patient's satisfaction with this kind of conservative treatment are evaluated in a retrospective survey. ⋯ Despite the uncomfortable arm position during immobilisation the therapy in an external rotation brace showed a high acceptance. In addition to previous results regarding reposition of the labroligamentous complex it appears to be proven a suitable therapy for first-time traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation.

Case Reports[Ambulatory CT-assisted thoracic sympathetic block as an additional approach to treatment of complex regional pain syndromes after sport injuries].
Also after bagatelle trauma, some patients can develop a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The limb concerned usually shows a marked temperature difference to the contralateral side. Apart from a doughy swelling, the patient is impaired in particular by burning pain and a restricted range of motion. The objective of the present study was to examine the influence of early thoracic sympathetic nerve blockade on the basis of clinical and quantified blood flow parameters. ⋯ Outpatient CT-assisted temporary sympathetic nerve blockade is an effective and low-complication therapeutic option for the supportive treatment of patients with CRPS.
