Controlled Clinical Trial[Golf with total joint replacement of the hip and knee].
Playing golf after THR and TKR is discussed controversially by orthopedic surgeons and Data of 16 patients receiving 22 THR (18 m/4f, 12 r/10 l) and of 11 patients receiving 12 TKR (9 m/3f, 6 r/6 l) were analysed using a questionnaire. The mean age of THR-/TKR-sportsmen was 65,7 (58 - 78)/67,8 (61-76) years. In THR-/TKR-patients surgery was done 59 (12-226)/39 (12-105) month ago. ⋯ Patients with 21 THR and 12 TKR had less pain while playing golf in the operated joint one year after compared to one year before surgery, 1 patient with THR suffered more pain. During follow-up 13 THR/10 TKR reported of no problems playing golf, 7 THR/2 TKR had moderate pain, 2 THR/0 TKR had severe pain, no patients was unable playing golf following the joint replacement. Golf can be recommended as sporting activity after successful THR and TKR.

Case Reports[Traumatic internal carotid artery dissection associated with triathlon: a rare differential diagnosis].
Most cervical artery dissections occur spontaneously, but traumatic mechanisms can occasionally be identified. Traumatic internal carotid artery dissection has been attributed with several sports, but there are no reports of its occurrence in thriathlon. We report the case of a 63-year-old semi-professional triathlete, who noticed right-sided neck pain and parietooccipital headache after a triathlon competition. ⋯ Our patient reported receiving several blows to the neck in a congested 50-metre pool during the triathlon swimming stage. Furthermore, the hyperextended position of the neck during the subsequent cycling stage may have contributed, to a large extent, to the arterial dissection. The risk factors, presenting symptoms, diagnosis of internal carotid artery dissection are reviewed.

Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide. Due to its characteristic many injuries are expected. Muscular tightness is postulated as an intrinsic risk factor for the developement of a muscle injury. ⋯ The "functional muscular diagnostic" is suitable for screening muscular flexibility in soccer players. You found comprehensive muscular tightness among the soccer players. The value of stretching for preventing exercise-related muscle injury is still unclear.

Comparative Study[Achilles tendon ruptures: 25 year's experience in sport-orthopedic treatment].
From 1972 - 1996 570 Achilles tendon ruptures in 565 patients were treated in the Sportklinik Stuttgart. The 499 men and 66 women had an average age of 38 years. For the diagnosis of a Achilles tendon rupture Ultrasound and MRI are important procedures, but clinical history and examination are still the best methods to find an Achilles tendon rupture (100%). ⋯ Since we use an early functional rehabilitation concept instead of plaster immobilisation, all methods to treat a ruptured Achilles tendon have been improved. 43.5% of the patients after plaster immobilisation and 28.8% of the patients after early functional rehabilitation had a subjectively felt force reduction. Other important selecting criteria are the risk factors related to treatment method. Minimal invasive percutaneous Achilles tendon repair is considerably better than conservative therapy with a high rate of re-rupture (9.8%) and better than the open surgical repair, which carries a higher risk of infection (2.2%)

Aim of this study was to analyse the mechanisms of kitesurfing injuries. For this purpose we performed a survey among 72 kitesurfers in the north of Germany. 31 accidents have been registrated among all 72 athletes during the 2001 season. 3 additional accidents occurred where a windsurfer got injured. 5 athletes had medium injuries such as fractures, all remaining athletes presented with minor injuries, that did not require medical treatment. The incidence of medium kite injuries was 1/1000 hours; the incidence of minor kite injuries was 5/1000 hours. ⋯ Kitesurfing is a new rapidly growing sport. To date the risk potential of this new sport is unclear. The analysis of the injury mechanisms allows conclusion regarding the prevention of kitesurfing injuries.
