Internal medicine training programs operate under the assumption that the three-year residency training period is sufficient for trainees to achieve the depth and breadth of clinical experience necessary for independent practice; however, the medical conditions to which residents are exposed in clinical practice are not easily measured. As a result, residents' clinical educational experiences are poorly understood. ⋯ The crosswalk tool introduced here translated residents' patient care activities into discrete, measurable educational content and enabled one internal medicine residency training program to characterize residents' inpatient educational experience with a high degree of resolution. Leaders of other programs seeking to profile the clinical exposure of their trainees may adopt this strategy. Such clinical content mapping drives innovation in the experiential curriculum, enables comparison across practice sites, and lays the groundwork to test associations between individual clinical exposure and competency-based outcomes, which, in turn, will allow medical educators to draw conclusions regarding how clinical experience reflects clinical competency.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical schools have offered a virtual application process. Minimal literature is available to guide best practices. ⋯ VI, likely to be a temporary-but-universal fixture of upcoming application cycles, may benefit applicants and interviewers alike by saving resources and diversifying those involved. Next steps are developing programming that will permit applicants to virtually explore the institution and connect more with current students. Future research should evaluate potential bias in VI to ensure an equitable application process for all.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions to Reduce Burnout and Stress in Physicians: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in reducing burnout and stress among physicians. ⋯ MBIs can be effective in reducing physicians' burnout and stress. Shortcomings in the quality of evidence highlight the need for high-quality controlled trials providing long-term follow-up data.

Doctors experience a range of negative reactions when managing acutely unwell patients. These may manifest as emotions or behaviors. Without appropriate coping strategies, these emotions and behaviors can impede optimal clinical performance, which directly affects patient care. Athletes use performance enhancing routines (PERs) to minimize the effect of their negative emotions and behaviors on competitive performance. The authors investigated whether PERs could similarly improve recently qualified doctors' emotional and behavioral control while managing acutely unwell patients and whether the doctors perceived any effect on clinical performance. ⋯ This is the first study to employ individualized PERs based on sports psychology in a medical context. The PERFORM model could be introduced into existing acute patient management courses to provide emotional regulation coaching alongside clinical skills training. Further research might investigate PERFORM's effect in other environments where emotional and behavioral control is paramount, such as surgery.
