Microaggressions experienced by people with multiple sclerosis in the workplace: An exploratory study using Sue's taxonomy.
Microaggressions are subtle forms of discrimination and include verbal, nonverbal, or environmental slights that convey disparaging messages to people based upon their group membership, such as disability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of microaggressions in the workplace among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). ⋯ The themes that emerged from the focus groups further our understanding of microaggressions as a factor impacting the work experiences of people with MS. Findings have implications for rehabilitation practitioners and future research to promote work life, job retention, and well-being of people with MS. Online and offline awareness deficits: Anosognosia for spatial neglect.
Anosognosia for spatial neglect (ASN) can be offline or online. Offline ASN is general unawareness of having experienced spatial deficits. Online ASN is an awareness deficit of underestimating spatial difficulties that likely to occur in an upcoming task (anticipatory ASN) or have just occurred during the task (emergent ASN). We explored the relationships among spatial neglect, offline ASN, anticipatory ASN, and emergent ASN. Research Method/Design: Forty-four survivors of stroke answered questionnaires assessing offline and online self-awareness of spatial problems. The online questionnaire was asked immediately before and after each of 4 tests for spatial neglect, including shape cancellation, address and sentence copying, telephone dialing, and indented paragraph reading. ⋯ Individuals with spatial neglect acknowledge their spatial difficulty (certainty of error occurrence) but may not necessarily recognize the extent of their difficulty (accuracy of error estimation). Our findings suggest that offline and online ASN are independent. A potential implication from the study is that familiar and challenging tasks may facilitate emergence of self-awareness. Randomized Controlled TrialVirtual reality analgesia for burn joint flexibility: A randomized controlled trial.
We conducted a randomized controlled study to determine the effects of virtual reality (VR) distraction on pain and range of motion (ROM) in patients hospitalized for burn care during active physical therapy exercises. ⋯ Immersive VR reduced pain during ROM exercises that were under the control of the patient. Towards an integration of the health promotion models of self-determination theory and theory of planned behavior among people with chronic pain.
People with chronic pain and related disability often report motivational difficulties with engaging in health-promoting behaviors. Although health promotion models of self-determination theory (SDT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) have been shown to explain the motivational processes behind health behaviors in the general population, there is limited theoretical research among persons with chronic pain. This study examined the integration of such theories relevant to physical activity and exercise behavior among pain populations. ⋯ Despite preexisting pain and functional disability, the findings suggest that health behavior factors from both SDT and TPB are associated with physical activity and exercise participation. This line of research should encourage rehabilitation professionals to recommend regular physical activity and exercise, while simultaneously addressing and monitoring the SDT and TPB factors that are well-timed and appropriate for persons with chronic pain through motivation-oriented rehabilitation approaches. Qualitative study of barriers and facilitators to cigarette smoking after spinal cord injury.
Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) have been shown to have rates of smoking as high as or higher than the general population. As those with SCI are at increased risk for negative health outcomes and early mortality, smoking can be especially dangerous. Our purpose was to assess barriers and facilitators of smoking cessation as defined by those with SCI. ⋯ These categories and themes identify the key barriers and facilitators of smoking cessation in this sample of persons with SCI. Future studies should further quantify specific facilitators and barriers within smoking-related studies and address these in intervention programs and studies of smoking cessation.
