The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether new experimental multifocal optical designs incorporating diffractive/refractive optics for correction of presbyopia in a soft contact lens would compromise binocular contrast sensitivity at distance while achieving 20/20 binocular visual acuity at near. ⋯ The data show that experimental FO1 lens and the experimental combination of the FO1/3B1 lenses can be prescribed to not compromise distance binocular contrast sensitivity.

To develop a model eye to study laser-tissue interactions during retinal imaging with scanning ophthalmoscopy. ⋯ The model eye should be a valuable tool for investigating laser-tissue interactions during scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and the derivation of digital retinal and tomographic images. This model should also enable a determination of the accuracy with which digital imaging techniques, such as the optical coherence tomograph and Heidelberg Retina Tomograph, measure retinal structure.

Accommodative spasm (AS) has been reported to be a rare cause of an acquired unilateral visual loss. We describe a unique case of acquired visual loss due to an apparent unilateral AS triggered by occlusion of the contralateral eye. Clinical examination and photorefraction techniques were performed during the acute phase of the disorder and in the follow-up evaluations. ⋯ AS can be the cause of acquired unilateral visual loss. To our knowledge, this is the first documented report of an apparent unilateral AS triggered by occlusion of the contralateral eye.

The contact lens and myopia progression (CLAMP) study: design and baseline data.
Although previous contact lens myopia control studies indicate that rigid contact lenses slow the progression of myopia in children, they have all suffered from limitations that challenge the significance of their results. The Contact Lens and Myopia Progression (CLAMP) Study addresses the limitations of previous studies and attempts to correct them by implementing alternative Study designs. The CLAMP study also measures all the ocular components to examine the potential mechanism of treatment effect. ⋯ Four of five children aged 8- to 11-years-old were able to adapt to rigid gas-permeable contact lens wear. The CLAMP Study aims to further clarify the effect of rigid gas-permeable contact lenses on myopia progression in children.
