Multicenter StudyPrevalence of chronic postsurgical pain after thoracotomy and total knee arthroplasty: a retrospective multicenter study in Japan (Japanese Study Group of Subacute Postoperative Pain).
We performed a multicenter observational study to assess the prevalence and risk factors of persistent pain after lung cancer surgery and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the Japanese population. After receiving Ethics Committee approval, a retrospective chart review was performed for patients who underwent surgery at seven university hospitals in Japan in 2013. A total of 511 patients who underwent lung cancer surgery and 298 patients who underwent TKA were included. ⋯ Anesthetic methods or techniques during both types of surgery did not significantly affect the prevalence of CPSP. This is the first study in which the prevalence of CPSP after lung surgery and TKA in Japanese population was extensively evaluated in a multicenter trial. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the prevalence of CPSP in the Japanese population and to identify risk factors and prevention methods.

Multicenter StudyPostoperative mortality and morbidity following non-cardiac surgery in a healthy patient population.
Perioperative mortality ranges from 0.4% to as high as nearly 12%. Currently, there are no large-scale studies looking specifically at the healthy surgical population alone. The primary objective of this study was to report 30-day mortality and morbidity in healthy patients and define any risk factors. ⋯ Thirty-day mortality and morbidity is, as expected, lower in the healthy surgical population. Age may be an indication to further risk stratify patients that are ASA PS 1 or 2 to better reflect perioperative risk.

Multicenter Study Observational StudySocioeconomic value of intervention for chronic pain.
The purpose of this study was to examine the cost-effectiveness of pain treatments in two pain centers in Japan. ⋯ Based on our results, the EQ-5D is reliable for evaluating chronic pain in patients. The medico-economic balance was appropriate for all treatments provided in two comprehensive pain centers in Japan.

Multicenter StudyNon-lactate strong ion difference: a clearer picture.
The recommended method for elucidating the effects of strong ions other than lactate on acid-base balance is to calculate the non-lactate strong ion difference (SIDnl). A relationship between HCO3 (-) and SIDnl in hyperchloremic patients has already been demonstrated; in the present study, the relationships between SIDnl, the apparent strong ion difference (SIDa), and mortality at intensive care unit (ICU) admission were investigated. ⋯ SIDnl can be used to determine the effects of strong ions other than lactate on SIDa values and acid-base balance. Furthermore, a low SIDnl at ICU admission can be a prognostic indicator of mortality.

Case Reports Multicenter StudyIncidence of cannot intubate-cannot ventilate (CICV): results of a 3-year retrospective multicenter clinical study in a network of university hospitals.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of cannot intubate-cannot ventilate (CICV) during general anesthesia during a 3-year period in a network of university hospitals and to evaluate the events related to it. ⋯ In our survey, we found that the incidence of CICV during a 3-year period (2010-2012) was 0.003% or 1 in 32,000 cases. The three CICV situations occurred after repeated intubation attempts with multiple devices. The appropriate airway devices to be used in a particular difficult airway situation should be carefully considered before performing multiple attempts.
