Background: Tuberculosis (TB) and malnutrition are major global health problems, with multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB complicating international efforts. The role of vitamin D in susceptibility to and as an adjunctive treatment for TB is being studied extensively, although no study has included MDR-TB patients in context to dietary profile with vitamin D levels and sunlight exposure. Objective: This study aimed to estimate vitamin D serum levels and examine their association with dietary intake of vitamin D and sun exposure in patients with MDR-TB. ⋯ Dietary intake may be more important than sun exposure in determining serum levels. However, the significance of this finding is uncertain. Further studies are required to confirm the association, direction, and potential for vitamin D supplementation to treat or prevent MDR-TB infection.

It was well documented that calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) participate in many physiological processes. We aimed to study the changing trend of serum levels of Ca, P, and Mg in frequent respiratory tract infections (FRTI) in children. ⋯ Serum levels of Ca and P may reflect the inflammatory status in children with FRTI. Alteration of serum Ca level may predict the risk of bronchitis and influenza B virus infection. Keeping the homeostasis of Ca, P, and Mg may be important for the prevention and treatment of FRTI.

Ankle sprains are the most common sports-related injuries. Individuals with time-loss ankle sprains often experience residual symptoms and chronic ankle instability years after injury. Up to 90% of post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis cases are associated with severe ankle sprain. This study aimed to examine whether ankle injury severity sustained during youth sports participation is associated with ankle symptoms and function. ⋯ Severe ankle sprain with a loss of > 4 weeks from sports participation at the time of injury is independently associated with poorer ankle symptoms, pain, and ankle-related quality of life after 3-15 years. Secondary prevention measures are needed in individuals with a history of severe ankle sprains to mitigate the potential health consequences.

Individual genetic background can play an essential role in determining the development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). PTPN13 and CHEK2 play important roles in the pathogenesis of ESCC. This case-control study aimed to analyze the association between gene polymorphisms and ESCC susceptibility. ⋯ Our findings display that PTPN13 rs989902 and CHEK2 rs738722 are associated with an increased risk of ESCC in the Chinese Han population.

To establish a risk stratification score to facilitate individualized treatment for patients with advanced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ Novel LAPS score may help to facilitate individualized treatment of advanced EGFR-mutated NSCLC receiving EGFR-TKI with or without bevacizumab.
