Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and syphilis have been the most common co-infections that hinder treatment outcomes and increase early mortality among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV). In this study, we aimed to determine the burden of HBV and syphilis co-infections and its impact on treatment outcomes among PLHIV in Ethiopia. ⋯ Burden of HBV and syphilis co-infections is high particularly among male and adolescent PLHIV and these co-infections hinder virologic and immunologic outcome in Ethiopia. Hence, the program shall enhance HBV and syphilis testing and treatment.

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common endocrine malignant tumour. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential molecular mechanism of circRNA regulating immune-related mRNA through sponge miRNA in the occurrence and immune regulation of PTC. ⋯ Several circRNA-miRNA-mRNA axes identified in this study may be related to the occurrence, progression and survival of PTC. This lays a theoretical foundation for further understanding the molecular mechanism of PTC, and also contributes to clinical management and research.

Athletes are susceptible to acute respiratory tract infections, including SARS-CoV-2, which can affect cardiovascular function. We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 infection and quarantine on cardiac function in male and female collegiate athletes. ⋯ Our study reveals unique sex-specific cardiac changes in collegiate athletes following SARS-CoV-2 infection and quarantine compared to controls. Despite a mild reduction in LVEF, which was only observed in the first weeks following infection, no clinically significant cardiac abnormalities were observed. Further research is required to understand if the changes in LVEF are directly attributed to the infection or indirectly through exercise restrictions resulting from quarantine.

The varicella vaccine is not included in the national childhood immunization schedules in China. Varicella epidemics and outbreaks are frequently reported, and the evidence for the effectiveness of the varicella vaccine remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate varicella vaccine effectiveness in Wuxi, China. ⋯ Two-dose varicella vaccination was recommended as an effective health intervention to prevent varicella in Wuxi, China. Varicella vaccination is urgently needed in routine childhood immunisation programs.

Liver cirrhosis is a significant yet largely preventable and underappreciated cause of global health loss. This study aimed to profile the global and regional burdens of liver cirrhosis between 2010 and 2019 and the contributions of various aetiologies. ⋯ Albeit the global burden of cirrhosis incidence increased from 2010 to 2019, cirrhosis-associated deaths and DALYs declined significantly. Notably, NAFLD exhibited the most significant increase as a contributor to cirrhosis worldwide.
