To evaluate an experiential student clinical addiction research program by analyzing its components, evaluation survey data, and scientific outputs. ⋯ This summer student research program successfully introduced students to addiction medicine and research, manifested by high peer-reviewed publication productivity. While our program engaged and involved committed mentors and inspired mentees to pursue professional paths in addiction research, it did not specifically incorporate attention to equity and diversity into program planning and implementation. Going forward, the program will improve equity by increasing the recruitment of trainees from disadvantaged groups and engaging underrepresented faculty.KEY MESSAGESSummer programs can be effective in engaging medical students and trainees in research early in their trajectory and inspire them to incorporate research into their careers.Programs that integrate experiential addiction research learning, i.e. mentored research activities, didactic sessions, and clinical observerships, can provide trainees with a profound understanding of substance use disorder treatment and research.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) is a common subtype of HLH with heterogeneous clinical presentations from self-limited to death, of which adults are worse than children. ⋯ The IH index can early identify adult patients with a poor prognosis of EBV-HLH, initiating timely and appropriate treatment.KEY MESSAGESA combined index of sCD25, PCT, and eGFR was obtained to predict prognosis, named the Improved Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis index (IH index).IH index can early identify adult patients with a poor prognosis of EBV-HLH, initiating timely and appropriate treatment.

The establishment of Alternate Care Sites (ACS) helped the most severely impacted countries expand their response capability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and risk factors associated with the mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients at Alternate Care Site in Mexico City. ⋯ This study identified the clinical characteristics and risk factors for mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients at ACS in Mexico City.KEY MESSAGESAn Alternate Care Site (ACS) is any building or structure that is temporarily converted or constructed for healthcare use during a public health emergency.Factors associated with death included male gender, age over 50 years, and lower educational attainment (elementary school or less). The findings corroborate the utility of the CALL score as a predictor of mortality; lymphopenia ≤1 × 103/μL was the most relevant biomarker.

Treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) with diacetylmorphine is an evidence-based form of drug treatment, but it is not available in the United States (US). Better understanding acceptability of treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine among people who use opioids (PWUO) in the US may expedite future initiatives designed to engage persons in this form of treatment should it become available. The purpose of this research is to examine factors associated with interest in treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine among a sample of PWUO in the US. ⋯ The majority of participants reported interest in treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine. Given worsening trends in the addiction and overdose crisis in the US, treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine should be considered as another evidence-based option for treating OUD.KEY MESSAGESInterest in treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine was high among a sample of people who use opioids in the United States.Factors associated with increased interest in treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine included having at least a high school education, having ever overdosed, and not having health insurance.Past utilization of medications for opioid use disorder was associated with interest in treatment with injectable diacetylmorphine.

Long-term exposure to air pollution is known to be harmful to preterm birth (PTB), but little is known about the short-term effects. This study aims to quantify the short-term effect of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on PTB. ⋯ Maternal exposure to NO2, PM2.5 and PM10 before delivery has a significant risk for PTB, particularly in the cold season.Key messagesMaternal exposure to NO2 was significant associated with an increased risk of preterm birth at the day 1 before delivery.Particle matter (PM2.5 and PM10) showed a significant short-term effect on preterm birth in the cold season. The effects of air pollutants on preterm birth was greater in the cold season compared with the warm season.
