Acknowledging the association between diet and systemic inflammation, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and the Energy-Adjusted DII (E-DIITM) were developed to categorize diet from anti- to pro-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the relationship between DII and E-DII against the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) to assess the use of energy-adjustment when analyzing the inflammatory potential of the diet. ⋯ Use of an inflammatory index along with the HEI may provide further understanding into relationships between dietary quality by nutrient and food group consumption on the inflammatory potential of the diet.

Patient safety strategies highlight patients' own active involvement in ensuring medication safety. A prerequisite for involving patients in their medication therapy is having tools that can assist them in ensuring safe medicine use. Older home-dwelling adults with multiple medications are at high risk for medication-related problems, yet only a few age-specific patient self-administered medication risk screening tools exist. This study aimed to develop, validate, and assess the feasibility of a self-administered medication risk checklist for home-dwelling older adults ≥65 years. ⋯ A wide range of potential medication risks related to the medication use process can be identified by patient self-assessment. Screening tools such as LOTTA can enhance early detection of potential medication risks and risk communication between older adults and their healthcare providers. A wider and more integrated use of the checklist could be facilitated by making it electronically available as part of the patient information systems.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) monitoring facilitates the detection of recurrence in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) after resection. False-positive CEA has been reported in CRC patients with certain comorbidities or smokers. However, limited information is currently available on the frequency of and changes in falsely elevated CEA levels in patients without these conditions. ⋯ Unexplained CEA elevations were observed in 20% of recurrence-free CRC patients after surgery, and were classified into three patterns based on longitudinal changes. A more detailed understanding of patient-specific fluctuations in CEA will prevent unnecessary imaging studies and reduce medical costs.

Metaplastic thymoma (MT) is a very uncommon thymoma type, with biphasic differentiation as one of its histological characteristics. This histological pattern, however, can also be mistaken for type A thymoma and the A component in type AB thymoma. ⋯ For the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of challenging cases, the YAP1-MAML2 rearrangement and GTF2I mutation were both significant molecular events specific to MT and type A thymoma, respectively.

Obesity, particularly excessive body fat, is an established risk factor and substantial prognostic determinant in breast cancer. Recent studies suggested that diet-related inflammation plays a key role in obesity. This study aimed to determine the association between energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and body composition, particularly body fat percentage, among patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. ⋯ A higher E-DII was associated with increased body fat percentage, suggesting the potential of advocating anti-inflammatory diet to combat obesity among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
