Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) encompass a group of heterogeneous haematopoietic stem cell malignancies characterised by ineffective haematopoiesis, cytological aberrations, and a propensity for progression to acute myeloid leukaemia. Diagnosis and disease prognostic stratification are much based on genomic abnormalities. The traditional metaphase cytogenetics analysis (MC) can detect about 40-60% aberrations. Single-nucleotide polymorphism arrays (SNP-A) karyotyping can detect copy number variations with a higher resolution and has a unique advantage in detection of copy number neutral loss of heterozygosity (CN-LOH). Combining these two methods may improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy for MDS. ⋯ The combination of MC and SNP-A based karyotyping can further improve the diagnostic yield and provide more precise prognostic stratification in MDS patients. However, SNP-A may not completely replace MC because of its inability to detect balanced translocation and to detect different clones. From a practical point of view, we recommend the concurrent use of SNP-A and MC in the initial karyotypic evaluation for MDS patients on diagnosis and prognosis stratification.KEY MESSAGESSNP-A based karyotyping can further improve the MDS diagnostic yield and provide more precise prognostic stratification in MDS patients.Acquired CN-LOH is a characteristic chromosomal aberration of MDS, which should be integrated to the diagnostic project of MDS.The concurrent use of SNP-A and MC in the initial karyotypic evaluation for MDS patients can be recommended.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether oscillometric AS measurements are different in pregnant women with and without preeclampsia (PE). ⋯ PWV and Alx-75 are higher in pregnancies complicated by PE, in comparison with normotensive pregnancies, as well as in early-onset PE, in comparison with late-onset PE.Key messagesPulse wave velocity is higher in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia.Augmentation index at a heart rate of 75 beats per minute is higher in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia.Arterial stiffness assessment is a promising risk-stratification tool for future cardiovascular complications but further studies are required.

The Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ) is an instrument that assesses occupational balance (OB). It has been transculturality adapted and validated in different countries, showing adequate psychometric properties. To date, no general population-based cut-off points for OB have been developed. ⋯ The OBQ-E presents adequate psychometric properties, and its normative data can be used as a reference to assess and monitor the occupational balance in the general Spanish population.KEY MESSAGESThe 'Occupational Balance Questionnaire' (OBQ), stands out as a specific measure of the concept of Occupational Balance, considered as satisfaction with the number and variation of occupations in which the person participates.The OBQ is a short and simple instrument that can be a useful tool for use in population-based and epidemiological studies to monitor OB and explore the associated factors or implications of disturbed OB.The Spanish version of the OBQ (OBQ-E) seems to be a reliable and valid questionnaire to assess the perception of balance between occupations, related to health and well-being in the Spanish adult population.

Role models are essential in medical education, yet empirical research is relatively insufficient on the influence of prosocial modelling on medical students' career commitment. The prosocial behaviour of medical staff involved in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the beginning of 2020 presents an opportunity to fill the research gap. We explored and compared the different associations of the two most important role models for medical students - parents and faculty- with medical students' career commitment. ⋯ Our study provides new evidence on the potential roles of parents and faculty in shaping medical students' career commitment. Encouraging faculty to act as positive role models could help medical students increase their intention to become doctors.KEY MESSAGESProsocial modelling could enhance students' intention to pursue medical careers.The association of prosocial behaviour of faculty is larger than that of parents on medical students.Those who have prior medical career commitment are much more likely to persist in the medical profession, and prosocial modelling of faculty is positively associated with their medical career commitment.

The clinical application of lung cancer detection based on breath test is still challenging due to lack of predictive molecular markers in exhaled breath. This study explored potential lung cancer biomarkers and their related pathways using a typical process for metabolomics investigation. ⋯ Although a series of related research reported diagnostic models with highly sensitive and specific prediction, the clinical application of lung cancer detection based on breath test is still challenging due to disease heterogeneity and lack of predictive molecular markers in exhaled breath. This study may promote the clinical application of this technique which is suitable for large-scale screening thanks to its low-cost and non-invasiveness. As a result, the mortality of lung cancer may be decreased in future.Key messagesIn the present study, 11 pathways involving 8 potential biomarkers were discovered to be dysregulated pathways of lung cancer.We found that it is possible to apply metabolomics methods in analysis of data from breath test, which is meaningful to discover convinced volatile markers with definite pathological and histological significance.
