Aortic aneurysm (AA) is a serious condition that largely increases the risk of aortic dissection and sudden death. Exploring the global burden of disease and changes in risk factors for AA is essential for public health policy development. ⋯ This study discovered a rebounding trend in the aortic aneurysm-related death burden globally. High systolic blood pressure will be the top risk factor attributed to death from AA. Therefore, it should be considered as the first-degree risk factor in the guidance of AA management and criteria for population-based screening programs.Key messagesThe death burden of aortic aneurysms is beginning to rebound globally, and the trend will continue for the next decade.High systolic blood pressure will replace smoking as the most important risk factor associated with aortic aneurysm death.

To analyse the regulatory effect of Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) on NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) as well as its effect on cisplatin (CDDP) therapy and to explore its clinical significance. ⋯ Fn infection can induce high expression of NLRP3 in ESCC, lead to MDSCs enrichment, weaken the body's antitumour immunity, and lead to CDDP treatment resistance. The effective elimination of Fn and the inhibition of MDSCs enrichment may provide new strategies and treatments for ESCC.HighlightsThe survival of ESCC patients with Fn infection, high NLRP3 expression and MDSCs enrichment was significantly shortened.Fn infection could cause CDDP resistance in ESCC.Fn could induce the enrichment of MDSCs in the tumour microenvironment by activating NLRP3 in ESCC cells.

It has been found that childhood obesity (CO) may play an important role in the onset and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Thus we conducted this mendelian randomisation analysis (MR) to evaluate the causal association between childhood obesity and osteoarthritis. ⋯ There appears to be a causal relationship between childhood obesity and OA. Our results indicate that individuals with a history of childhood obesity require specific clinical attention to prevent the development of knee and hip OA.

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP3) has been reported to be related to the risk of some cancers. Here we focussed on serum IGFBP3 as a possible biomarker of diagnosis and prognosis for oesophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC). ⋯ We demonstrated that serum IGFBP3 was a potential biomarker of diagnosis and prognosis for ESCC. Meanwhile, the nomogram might help predict the prognosis of ESCC. Key MessageSerum IGFBP3 showed early diagnostic value in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma with independent cohort validation. Moreover, serum IGFBP3 was identified as an independent prognostic risk factor, which was used to construct a nomogram with improved prognosis ability in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Eating less and moving more are the simplest and most common strategies to combat excessive weight. Several other lifestyle factors can also contribute to maintaining a healthy weight. ⋯ This study revealed significant associations between BMI and breakfast intake, physical activities, and sedentary behaviours. Of these, using laptops and playing video games were the key sedentary activities that influenced BMI.Key messagesA significantly higher prevalence of overweight and obesity was noted among boys compared to girls in private school students, aged 10-15 years, in Al-Ahsa governorate, Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.Boys slept more than girls on school days, and they were more active, used laptops more frequently, and played more video games than girls. Girls were less sedentary, watched television more often, and used smartphones more frequently than boys.Among private school students aged 10-15 years in Al-Ahsa governorate, Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, BMI was significantly associated with breakfast intake frequency, physical activity, and sedentary behaviours, among which using laptops and playing video games were the sedentary activities that most influenced BMI.
