Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of morbidity and mortality after liver resection. Albuminuria is associated with a higher risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. This study evaluated albuminuria as a predictor of the outcome of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in patients with pre-existing DM. ⋯ Preoperative albuminuria is an independent factor affecting mortality within 3 years after LDLT in type II diabetic patients. Myocardial infarction was the leading cause of death in 25% of cases, followed by hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence, sepsis, and graft failure.KEY MESSAGESDiabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of morbidity and mortality after liver resection.Albuminuria is associated with a higher risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.Preoperative albuminuria is a significant predictor of mortality within 3 years after LDLT in diabetic patients.

The vulnerability of maintenance dialysis patients with COVID-19: mortality and risk factors from a developing country.
Patients on maintenance dialysis therapy are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 and its complications. This study aimed to assess the incidence, epidemiological characteristics, and mortality rate of COVID-19 among maintenance dialysis patients. This retrospective observational chart review study included 548 patients from all dialysis units in the West Bank of Palestine who acquired COVID-19 between 5 March 2020, and 11 August 2021. ⋯ The mortality rate among maintenance dialysis patients was 26.8%, more than 25 times higher than that of the general population. The risk of mortality was significantly increased with age, male sex, smoking, diabetes, and having central venous catheter as vascular access for haemodialysis. Strict infection control measures, as well as the promotion of home dialysis, are necessary to reduce the risk of infection.

Gender differences in esophageal variceal bleeding in the United States.
Esophageal variceal bleeding is a common reason for hospitalization in patients with cirrhosis. The main objective of this study was to analyze the effects of gender differences on outcomes in hospitalizations related to Esophageal variceal bleeding in the United States. ⋯ Women hospitalised with esophageal variceal bleeding are at a lower risk of death compared to males. Further research is needed to elucidate the factors associated with this lower risk.

Clostridiodes difficile is a leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea. In this study, we aimed to identify the rates and predictors for 30-day readmissions of Clostridiodes difficile Enterocolitis (CDE) in the United States. ⋯ The all-cause 30-day readmission rate and inpatient mortality for CDE was 25.7% and 4.4%, respectively. Discharge AMA, DM and CKD were independent predictors for 30-day all-cause readmissions of CDE.KEY MESSAGEThe 30-day all-cause readmission rate for Clostridiodes difficile Enterocolitis was noted to be 21.4% in 2018.Independent predictors of 30-day all-cause readmissions for Clostridiodes difficile Enterocolitis include diabetes mellitus, discharged against medical advice and chronic kidney disease.Readmissions of Clostridiodes difficile Enterocolitis had higher mortality rates, healthcare cost and length of hospital stay compared to index admissions.

Hypertension and arthritis are two common diseases in the general population, with multiple common risk factors. This study aimed to assess the association between hypertension (HTN) and arthritis. ⋯ In this large nationally representative survey over 20 years, arthritis, including both RA and OA, was strongly associated with hypertension. Our study demonstrates a need for hypertension screening and blood control among patients with arthritis.Key MessagesArthritis was associated with hypertension. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are strongly associated with hypertension. There is an urgency for hypertension screening and blood control among patients with arthritis.
