Tumour characteristics and orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) criteria are risks for recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In Asia, most HCC is caused by chronic hepatitis B infection. Whether hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) is a risk factor for HCC recurrence after OLT is not clear. ⋯ Individuals with preoperative undetectable HBV DNA had advanced tumour characteristics and a higher proportion of HCC recurrence. Antiviral treatment for HCC should be performed, and HBV DNA undetectable should be obtained before OLT. But for an urgent OLT, preoperative detectable HBV DNA may not affect long-term survival.KEY MESSAGESPatients with HBV DNA detectable had advanced tumour characteristics, a higher proportion of extended OLT criteria, and HCC-recurrence.HBV DNA >2000 IU/mL was a risk factor for HCC recurrence.HBV DNA detectable was not a risk for HCC related death; extended OLT criteria affected long-term survival.

Patients' experiential knowledge is increasingly recognised as valuable for biomedical research. Its contribution can reveal unexplored aspects of their illnesses and allows research priorities to be refined according to theirs. It can also be argued that patients' experiential knowledge can contribute to biomedical research, by extending it to the most organic aspects of diseases. ⋯ KEY MESSAGESExperiential knowledge is a valuable source of information for research and the design of investigation protocols. The participatory approach allows co-designing protocols by drawing on experiential knowledge. The controversial dimension of EHS reveals the complexity of translating experiential knowledge into an experimental protocol.

In recent years, China has actively promoted the construction of first-class universities and disciplines of the world ('Double First-Class'), and built a new model of university development to solve Chinese problems and support high-quality economic and social development. In the context of China's efforts to promote the construction of new engineering, new medicine, new agriculture, and new liberal arts (referred to as the 'four new' disciplines), these disciplines are developing rapidly. As a specialty dealing with major life issues, medical education has become increasingly prominent. ⋯ KEY MESSAGESThe implementation of the 'four new' disciplines is a strategic choice for higher education. Engineering technology is an efficient path and hands-on approach to solving medical problems. Interdisciplinary and comprehensive educational approaches play an important role in the development of medical science.

In clinical practice, treatment goals are often set up without exploring what patients really want. We, therefore, collected individualised treatment goals of patients with osteoarthritis (OA), categorised and mapped them to the World Health Organisation International Classification for Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). ⋯ As the human lifespan as well as the number of people affected by OA worldwide increase, there is a growing need to identify and evaluate rehabilitation outcomes that are relevant to people with OA.Key MessagesTreat-to-target agreements between patients and health care providers present a step towards more personalised precision medicine, which will eventually lead to better reported functional and health outcomes.In patients with osteoarthritis, the Goal Attainment Scale instrument can be used to measure health outcomes at different time points and its content may be linked to ICF providing a unified language and conceptual scientific basis.

Background: Previous studies have proven that Purinostat Mesylate (PM) is a new HDAC inhibitor and exhibits significant antitumor efficacy. However, the clinical application of PM was greatly limited by its poor solubility in water and low bioavailability. Objective:To increase the solubility of PM through pharmaceutical research, and prepare it into an injection that meets the needs of intravenous use to promote its clinical application. ⋯ Our research provides a way for clinical administration of PM, which has been under phase I clinical trial for the treatment of relapsed or refractory B-cell-related hematologic malignancies in China and the USA. KEY MESSAGESWe developed a preparation of Purinostat Mesylate that can be administered intravenously, reducing the toxicity associated with oral administration. This preparation has an outstanding therapeutic effect on SU-DHL-6 xenograft tumour, indicating its clinical value, which has been under phase I clinical trial for the treatment of relapsed or refractory B-cell-related haematologic malignancies in China and the USA.
