Chinese herbal medicine for coronavirus disease 2019: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Currently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which can lead to severe respiratory failure and death, is now a global pandemic with no specific anti-viral drugs or vaccines. However, It is worth noting that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), especially Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), has been widely applied in mainland China since outbreak, bringing new hope for the prevention and control of COVID-19. A comprehensive literature searching was conducted in 7 electronic databases from their inception up to June 21, 2020 to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CHM for COVID-19. ⋯ Our meta-analyses found that comparing CHM group and conventional western medicine group, CHM group has improvements in several clinical parameters including lung CT, clinical cure rate, ranging from mild to critical cases, length of hospital stay, total score of clinical symptoms, fever reduction time, symptom score of fever, number of cough reduction cases, symptom score of cough, number of fatigue reduction cases, symptom score of fatigue, disappearing time of fatigue, TCM syndrome, viral nucleic acid testing, and inflammatory biomarkers (C-reactive protein). Besides, no severe adverse effects was identified by CHM. CHM, especially classical Chinese herbal formulas, could be used as potential candidates for COVID-19 in this battle.

Comparative efficacy and safety of PD-1/PD-L1 Inhibitors versus platinum-based chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a meta analysis of randomized controlled trials.
The main aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of inhibitors of programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) and its ligand, programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ First-line treatment of advanced NSCLC with immune monotherapy or immunochemotherapy confers a greater survival benefit than chemotherapy alone. Combination of chemotherapy with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors leads to an increase in adverse events, and PD-1 inhibitors offer enhanced survival benefits and fewer adverse events than PD-L1 inhibitors. Remarkably, female patients undergoing combination therapy had longer overall survival than male patients.

Vitamin D deficiency is estimated as the most common medical condition worldwide, with severe implications on survival and on several inflammatory, immune-mediated and thrombotic disorders, and especially for cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D could directly regulate the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) activity, therefore potentially interfering with the pharmacological effects of RAS Inhibitors (RASI), an issue that has seldom been explored. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of the use of RASI according to vitamin D levels among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). ⋯ Among patients undergoing PCI, the use of RASI was associated with lower risk of MACE only among patients with lower levels of vitamin D. Future larger studies are certainly warranted in order to define the prognostic implications of vitamin D supplementation on the RAS system modulation, especially among patients treated with RASI.

N-Acylethanolamine acid amidase (NAAA) deactivates the endogenous peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) agonist palmitoylethanolamide (PEA). NAAA-regulated PEA signaling participates in the control of peripheral inflammation, but evidence suggests also a role in the modulation of neuroinflammatory pathologies such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Here we show that disease progression in the mouse experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS is accompanied by induction of NAAA expression in spinal cord, which in presymptomatic animals is confined to motor neurons and oligodendrocytes but, as EAE progresses, extends to microglia/macrophages and other cell types. ⋯ Furthermore, intranasal lipopolysaccharide injections cause greater alveolar leukocyte accumulation in NaaaCD11b+ than in control mice. NaaaCD11b+ mice also display a more aggressive clinical response to EAE induction, compared to their wild-type littermates. The results identify NAAA as a critical control step in EAE pathogenesis, and point to this enzyme as a possible target for the treatment of MS.
