Case Reports[Injury of ICA during endonasal sinus surgery and management by endovascular stent application].
Injury of the internal carotid artery (ICA) during endonasal sinus surgery is rare but a life-threatening situation for the patient. For adequate treatment endovascular therapy as embolization or balloon occlusion is usually performed although there is a high risk of irreversible neurological deficits. ⋯ Although vascular stents are difficult to place in the intrasphenoidal course of the ICA, it provides an effective closure of the vascular injury and above all a sufficient cerebral perfusion, therefore, the risk of neurological defects can be reduced.

[Quality of life after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (a long-term study)].
A polyposis nasi has distinct impact on a patient's quality of life (QL). There are only few long term studies available regarding the effects of a functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in patient's QL with polyposis nasi after 7 years average follow-up. Furthermore sex-specific differences in polyposis nasi and FESS should be evaluated. ⋯ Patients with polyposis nasi significantly benefit long-term after FESS in their health-related QL. Revision surgery should not only be indicated by endoscopy, but by patient's QL.

Case Reports[A dangerous nasal foreign body: the button battery].
The effects of an incorporated button battery as a nasal foreign body with regard to the endonasal structures are serious. The following case report will illustrate this on the case of a 4?-year old boy. The acute treatment consisted of the removal of the battery and the debridement of the necroses. ⋯ Button batteries as incorporated nasal foreign bodies can lead to severe damage to the endonasal mucoperichondrium. It can lead to necrosis of the nasal septum cartilage and to consecutive nasal septum perforation. Based on these experiences and a review of literature, the conclusions should be drawn that an incorporated button battery should be considered as an ENT emergency case and the immediate removal of the foreign body should be striven for.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive inherited disease characterized by abnormal ciliary motion and impaired mucociliary clearance. The prevalence of PCD is approximately 1 : 15 000 - 1 : 20 000 in live births. Cilia dysfunction is also implicated in a wider spectrum of diseases due to impaired organ genesis and body symmetry. ⋯ Recent studies have begun to locate the PCD genes in the genome and characterize functional mutations. Specific diagnosis of the ciliary dysfunction requires physiological measurements as well as light- and electron microscopy. Abnormalities in ciliary motion and ultrastructural studies can be performed with nasal mucosal epithelium.
