Deep dermal and full-thickness burn wounds are excised and grafted with split-thickness skin grafts. Especially in less compliant patients such as young children, conventional fixing methods can often be ineffective due to high mobility rates in this age group. The aim of this retrospective single-centre study was to give an overview of our experience in the fixation of autologous split-thickness skin grafts (ASTSGs) on burn wounds by negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in paediatric patients. ⋯ To sum up our experience, the NPWT system has developed itself to be a constant, well-implemented and useful tool in securing ASTSGs to the wound bed. The main advantage of the technique is a much higher mobility of the patient compared to conventional fixation methods. The high compliance rate of an often challenging group of patients such as children recompenses possible higher costs compared to conventional fixation methods.

It is well established that a burn can result in negative psychological consequences. Throughout the literature there is also reference to individuals reporting positive changes post-burn. The concept of 'post-traumatic growth' (PTG) refers to such individuals, whose recovery exceeds pre-trauma levels of well-being. ⋯ Results support the theory that distress and trauma symptoms act as a catalyst for PTG. Coping styles and social support appear to facilitate this process. Clinical implications are discussed.

Patients recovering from critical illness especially those with critical illness related neuropathy, myopathy, or burns to face, arms and hands are often unable to communicate by writing, speech (due to tracheostomy) or lip reading. This may frustrate both patient and staff. Two low cost movement tracking systems based around a laptop webcam and a laser/optical gaming system sensor were utilised as control inputs for on-screen text creation software and both were evaluated as communication tools in volunteers. ⋯ Both devices may be potentially useful communication aids in patients in general and burns critical care units who cannot communicate by conventional means, due to the nature of their injuries.

The aim of this study is to understand the aetiological factors and pattern of burns caused by the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This hospital based study was conducted on consecutive patients admitted with major burns from September 2011 to August 2012. The data was recorded on predesigned data sheet. ⋯ LPG related burns are preventable to a large extent. There is a need to improve the safety standards in the LPG stove system. Public awareness needs to be improved.

Burn and ingestion injuries are common in developing countries because of poor access to safe energy sources, crowded living conditions, and insufficient knowledge of potential risks. The purpose of this study is to understand the scope of burn and ingestion injuries due to various energy source usages in South Africa. ⋯ Non-intentional liquid burns and ingestions to infants and babies were most common in this study, with many injuries also occurring among young adults. It is advised that interventions targeting low-income communities be conducted to increase awareness of burn and ingestion injuries.
