Chemical ocular burns are among the most frequently eye-related injuries, which require immediate and intensive evaluation and care since they may lead to potential complications such as superinfection, corneal perforation, and blindness.Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis, a species from Caricaceae family, contains highly active proteolytic enzymes in its latex that show healing activity in animal models bearing lesions of different etiologies. ⋯ Our work was the first one to evaluate the ophthalmic application of P1G10. Here we demonstrated that P1G10 is suitable for ocular administration and it has a promising corneal healing activity which may emerge as a new pharmacological tool to the development of a new drug for ocular surface chemical injuries in the future.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is considered a promising carrier for various substances and novel approaches using BNC in combination with antiseptics are well documented. However, the difference in the molecular weight of these molecules influences their uptake by and release from BNC. Analysing the diffusion of standard molecules with different weight, e.g. dextrans, offers the possibility to investigate the mobility of various molecules. We aimed to test the use of BNC regarding uptake and release of different standard molecules as well as two commercially available antiseptics for possible applications in future wound dressings. ⋯ Results obtained from the mobility of FITC-dextran molecules in the BNC matrix could open possible applications for the combination of BNC with other molecules for medical applications. Combination of both tested antiseptics with BNC showed to be an efficient approach to control bacterial infections.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been instrumental in the treatment of traumatic injuries, including burns, particularly in low- and middle-income counties. The purpose of this project was to catalogue burn injury related NGO activities, describe coordinated efforts, and provide insight to burn health care professionals seeking volunteer opportunities. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first effort towards the establishment of a Burn-NGO catalogue. Challenges included: frequent shifts in geographical regions supported, lack of collaboration among organizations, availability of public information, and austere environments. We invite collaborators to assist in the creation of a comprehensive, interactive and complete catalogue.
