An increasing aging population alongside a potentially increasing injury risk emphasizes a critical need for evidence-based burn care regarding preventive and therapeutic strategies tailored to the unique needs of older adults. However, we note a critical gap in understanding geriatric burn trends on a global scale and the care capacity across settings. Thus, this study sought to ascertain the global trend of geriatric burns with a focus on patient demographics, injury characteristics, capacities of care, and injury outcomes. ⋯ Burn injuries in older adults remain a public health issue. On the preventive aspect, the results demonstrate a need to intensify safety in the home or domestic setting, and during festive seasons. Therapeutically, the findings underscore a need to consider the inclusion of more specialist geriatric and palliative care services in the burn management process. Additionally, we identified a need to strengthen burn care capacity in the AFRO and SEARO regions.

As a p53-regulated gene, Wip1 regulates proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and senescence of several type cells, but its biological functions in keratinocytes and endothelial cells which are involved wound healing are not fully understood. This study aims to reveal the function and underlying mechanism of Wip1 in wound healing using models of transgenic animal, keratinocytes, and endothelial cells. ⋯ Our study directly supports that Wip1 regulated skin wound healing possibly by affecting bioactivities including proliferation, migration and apoptosis of keratinocytes and endothelial cells at least through by modulating ATM-p53 and mTOR signaling.

Laser speckle contrast imaging, an alternative to laser doppler imaging in clinical practice of burn wound care derivation of a color code.
To develop a color code and to investigate the validity of Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) for measuring burn wound healing potential (HP) in burn patients as compared to the reference standard Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI). ⋯ This is the first study in which a color code for the LSCI in adult clinical burn patients has been developed. Our study reconfirms the good performance of the LSCI for prediction of burn wound healing potential. This provides additional evidence for the potential value of the LSCI in specialized burn care.

Blood transfusions are essential to treating anaemia of burn injuries. It has recently been observed that patients with non-major burns < 20%TBSA may also develop anaemia requiring transfusion of blood products. Due to the morbidity and mortality rate associated with blood transfusions better understanding of risk factors may guide clinical practices to improve patient care. ⋯ Patient related comorbidities correlate with higher transfusion rates in non-major burn injuries. Due to the risk associated with the use of blood products decision to transfuse should adhere to current guideline practices and be tailored to specific patient requirements.

This study aims to identify residential fire risk factors and their health outcomes in terms of hospital admissions from burns and smoke inhalation together with related readmissions, length of hospital stay (LOS), costs of hospitalisation and mortality within 30 days of the fire incidence. Residential fire-related hospitalisations from 2005 to 2014 in New South Wales, Australia were identified using linked data. Univariate and multivariable Poisson regression analyses were performed to determine factors associated with residential fires on hospital admission and loss of life. ⋯ Individuals aged 65 and over with comorbidities and/or acquired severe injuries from the fire incident were at a higher risk of long-term hospitalisation and death. This study provides information to response agencies in communicating fire safety messages and intervention programs to target vulnerable population. In addition, it also supplies indicators on hospital usage and LOS following residential fires to health administrators.
