Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
The effect of a tissue engineered bilayered living skin analog, over meshed split-thickness autografts on the healing of excised burn wounds. The Apligraf Burn Study Group.
The potential of Apligraf(R) (Graftskin) (Organogenesis Inc., Canton, MA), to improve cosmetic and functional outcomes when applied over meshed split thickness autografts was evaluated in a multicenter, randomized within patient controlled clinical trial. Experimental treatment sites had Apligraf(R) placed over meshed autograft while control sites were treated with meshed autograft covered with meshed allograft, or meshed autograft not covered by a biologic dressing. Forty patients were entered into this study of which 38 were evaluable. ⋯ Vancouver burn scar scores were shown to be statistically better at Apligraf(R) sites compared to control at all time points from week 1 to month 24. These results indicate that Apligraf(R) is a suitable and clinically effective treatment for burn wounds when applied over meshed autografts. Furthermore, cosmetic and functional advantages with Apligraf(R) were demonstrated when applied over meshed autograft compared to the current standard treatments of meshed autografts.

The abbreviated burn specific pain anxiety scale: a multicenter study.
The authors examined ratings on a scale of pain-related anxiety in 173 burn patients in three groups: patients with small burns, patients with moderate burns and patients with extensive burns. The data suggest a greater degree of anxiety during procedures and before procedures in the burn patients with extensive burns than in burn patients with small and moderate burns. This study introduces a novel measure of pain-related anxiety in clinical burn patients, the abbreviated Burn Specific Pain Anxiety Scale (BSPAS), which showed a high degree of reliability. The alpha coefficients were high for the BSPAS subscales.

Epidemiology and mortality of burns in Tehran, Iran.
In order to assist with the prevention of burn injuries the epidemiology of burns in Tehran was investigated. In a retrospective study, 1239 files of patients who were living in Tehran and were injured between March 1994 and March 1995 were studied. Sixty-three per cent of patients were male and 37 per cent were female (age range, 1 month to 93 years). ⋯ The mortality rate was 51 per cent in males and 69 per cent in females. The mean body surface area burned was higher in females. The mortality rate was higher and the length of hospitalization was shorter in comparison with other studies in other countries.

Posttraumatic stress and maladjustment among adult burn survivors 1-2 years postburn.
Burn patients were assessed 14-24 months following their injury to estimate the prevalence of chronic posttraumatic stress in the adult burn population in The Netherlands. Among 428 patients, 33 per cent suffered severe posttraumatic stress symptomatology. Burn related health problems and shame were strongly associated with posttraumatic stress. Bootstrapping was used to estimate standardized regression weights in a structural equation model.

Multicenter Study
The epidemiology of burns in secondary care, in a population of 2.6 million people.
The numbers of residents of the four counties in the west of Anglia and Oxford Region (UK) who were treated for burns (including scalds) in accident and emergency (A&E) departments or admitted to hospital in 1994-95 were obtained from A&E departments and district health authority records. Burns comprised about 1 per cent of the workload in the A&E departments. ⋯ Approximately half the patients admitted to hospital with burns were admitted to burns units, a quarter to plastic surgery wards and the rest to different specialties including trauma and orthopaedics, paediatrics, and ophthalmology. The median length of stay was 6 days for burns units and 3 days for plastic surgery units.
