Multicentre observational study describing the systemic response to small-area burns in children.
Burns of less than 10% total body surface area (TBSA) are common injuries in children under five years of age. The inflammatory response to burn injury is well recognised for burns greater than 20% TBSA but has not been described for smaller burns. The aim of this study was to describe the systemic response to burn injury in young children with small-area burns. ⋯ An identifiable systemic inflammatory response to small-area burns in young children is reported. This knowledge can be used to aid in the diagnosis of children with a burn injury who re-present with a pyrexia, and no other symptoms to indicate clinical infection.

Potential efficacy of sensorimotor exercise program on pain, proprioception, mobility, and quality of life in diabetic patients with foot burns: A 12-week randomized control study.
Both diabetes mellitus (DM) and burn injuries lead to physical and psychological impairments. Foot burns are still a challenging health condition because of its important sensory role. No previous studies have assessed the physical therapy intervention on diabetic patients with foot burns. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential efficacy of sensorimotor exercise on pain, proprioception, mobility, balance, and quality of life in diabetic patients with foot burns. ⋯ Sensorimotor exercise training may improve, pain, proprioceptive responses, mobility, balance, and quality of life in diabetic patients with foot burns. Physiotherapists and rehabilitation providers should include the sensorimotor exercise in their protocols in the treatment of diabetic patients with foot burns.

Lower limb functional status and its determinants in moderate/major burns 3-6 months following injury: A two-center observational study.
Severe complications which may cause impaired physical functionoften develops over time following severe burn to the lower extremities. The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical determinants of lower limb functional status, functional mobility and exercise capacity in moderate/major burns 3-6 months following the injury. ⋯ Burn characteristics and clinical evaluations of patients are important determinants of the lower limb functional status, mobility and exercise capacity in burn patients. These predictors should be considered to improve physical functions related to the lower limb when creating a personalized rehabilitation program.

Definitive treatment to achieve wound healing in major burns frequently include skin transplantation, where split-thickness skin grafts is considered gold standard. This method is associated with several drawbacks. To overcome these hurdles, efforts have been made to develop tissue engineered skin substitutes, often comprised of a combination of cells and biomaterials. ⋯ In conclusion, the experiments performed illustrate that autologous cells seeded on porous gelatin microcarriers stimulates the re-epithelialization of wounds. This method could be a promising candidate for skin transplantation. Future studies will focus on additional outcome parameters to evaluate long-term quality of healing following transplantation.

Steam inhalation is common practice in UK households for coryzal symptoms in adults and children. Steam inhalation has the potential to and has caused significant scald injuries, predominantly due to unintentional contact with the hot water used. ⋯ Scald injuries secondary to steam inhalation have a significant impact both in terms of hospital stay and cost. Since this study captured only patients admitted to hospital, the true negative impact of steam inhalation is likely to be much higher than calculated. Better public awareness on the risks of steam inhalation and primary prevention policies could reduce the frequency of such injuries.
