Nutritional status predicts burn outcomes in the developed world, but its effect on burn mortality in the developing world has not been widely studied. In sub Saharan Africa, burn is primarily a disease of children, and the majority of children in sub-Saharan Africa are malnourished. We therefore sought to determine the prevalence and effect of malnutrition on burn mortality at our institution. ⋯ Preexisting malnutrition in burn patients in sub-Saharan Africa increases odds of mortality after controlling for significant covariates. Survival of burn patients in this region will not reach that of the developed world until a strategy of aggressive nutritional support is implemented in this population.

Information about epidemiology on burns is rare in China. The aim of this article is to describe the pattern of burns in East China during a 10-year time period. ⋯ Compared with published data, these result are encouraging, which demonstrate that burn care and treatment has made significant progress. Burn clinicians should bear not only the responsibility to treat and cure burns, but also the popularization of knowledge about burn precautions and emergency treatments.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is one of the leading pathogens in hospital infections. To characterize the epidemiology of A. baumannii in a burn ward, we collected all A. baumannii isolates though 18 months. Antibiotic susceptibility and antibiotic resistant genes were tested. ⋯ ST368 (35%) was the dominant type, followed by ST195 (15%), ST191 (12%), ST369 (10%) and ST208 (10%). Majority (82.8%) of these isolates belong to clonal group 92, indicating the nosocomial spreading of A. baumannii. Further monitoring and control measures for A. baumannii spreading are necessary.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening infection requiring extensive debridement that may necessitate amputation. Free tissue transfer (FTT) is an option for reconstruction in difficult cases. Currently, only case reports have described FTT in the setting of NF, and comprehensive evidence on flap outcomes is lacking. The present study characterizes outcomes in patients with FTT following NF. ⋯ This study demonstrates that FTT provides a promising reconstructive option in the setting of NF without adversely affecting patient outcome.

To investigate the geographic distribution and temporal trends of burn admissions in an Australian setting. ⋯ The Mid-West and Wheatbelt rural regions were found to have the highest risk of burn admissions raising concerns about farming-related injury. Safety awareness and burn prevention strategies need to be continued, with specific attention to these high risk areas, to reduce burn admissions in Western Australia.
