Hand burns represent a unique challenge to the burns team due to the intricate structure and unrivalled functional importance of the hand. The initial assessment and prognosis relies on consideration of the specific site involved as well as depth of the burn. We created a simple severity score that could be used by referring non-specialists and researchers alike. ⋯ A receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis found a cut off score of 5.5, indicating that those with a HABS score below 6 did not require an operation, whereas those with a score above 6 did. The HABS score was shown to be more sensitive and specific that assessment of burn depth alone. The HABS score is a simple to use tool to stratify severity at initial presentation of hand burns which will be useful when referring, and when reporting outcomes.

Sex trafficking of women and girls is amongst the most prevalent and profitable types of human trafficking. Evidence suggests that sex trafficking is especially high in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where diverse types of burning are also prevalent especially among young females. The shortage of autologous skin sources not only adds difficulty to the repair of extremely large-area deep burn wounds but affects the healing quality. The aim of the present study is to explore an ideal method for repairing large-areas burn wounds with low scar formation. ⋯ Small auto- and cryopreserved allograft skin grafting of small auto- and allo-skin not only raised the graft expansion rate but offers a stable wound healing rate. This new technique may provide an option for repair of large-area deep burn wounds.

To describe the injuries due to fireworks use in Colombia during the period 2008-2013 and to identify factors associated with hospitalization and death due to this cause. ⋯ These results provided information for revising the public policies and intersectorial interventions to reduce the avoidable burden due to firework injuries at all times and not just during the high injury occurrence season.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of indomethacin and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, to heal eye burns induced with hydrofluoric acid in rabbits. ⋯ Dimethyl sulfoxide (40%) was efficient to induce reepithelization on mild hydrofluoric acid eye burns, whereas 0.1% indomethacin both alone and along with DMSO poorly induced reepithelization and exacerbated inflammation. Thus, 40% DMSO could be used for the treatment of corneal disorders.
